TLDR: IPC is the same as Maxwell if you counter in the gains of going to 16nm, it actually use 38% more power compare to the chip size than Maxwell.
again Pascal = Maxwell just 16nm same old stuff, nothing new, but Nvidia PR machine works like a charm :(

huh interesting read indeed, will have to wait for amd and see then
And you really think AMD will pull a unicorn out of their ass and it will be so much better then what Nvidia is offering??.....I'm no fan boy either way owning many Nvidia and many AMD cards. But its the same stuff every single year. What ever AMD makes will be comparable to Nvidia and there will be no clear winner.
Just saying, AMD is brining something new to the table, Nvidia is just caching out on old stuff, and it will probably work out for them because of fanboys and good PR, i dont think AMD will come with a 1080 killer, i just want them to come out with next gen, low power consumption, 390x/fury performance and im all happy.

Thanks for the article. Very detailed but I would say that it's more of the tick as opposed to a tock. I'm guessing they'll actually give a better architecture for Volta. This was a much needed die shrink more than anything else.
How is that any better if all you want is a lower power consumption card with fury performance? That's an improvement that isn't anymore impressive then pascel
I wasn't impressed when I saw the first benchmarks. It is the fastest card around, sure. But it's on 16nm FinFet for fuck sake. It's supposed to be so much better than it is. How can anyone be satisfied with these results at that ridiculous price point?

To me its not a failure at all.
The GTX1080 showed an impressive performance boost over the GTX980, which it suppose to replace.
Next to that it also beats a GTX980Ti and TitanX arround the board at a much lower power consumption.
To me its impressive from a performance standpoint.
You could ofc argue about pricing, because its not their flagship chip.
But currently its their flagship card, and that why its priced that way.
Wenn the GTX980 was launched back in the day, it also was their flagship card,
and it also came at a higher price point.
So yeah.
Yeah, I don't think its a failure, i think the hype for it is a bit misplaced though. But even if AMD's jump is more significant, I don't think its going to have something at the 1080's performance at least not near launch.
Also, we'll see how this founders edition ends up working out. The founder's card is $100 more. Most cards with custom cooling have the companies charge a premium over retail, so are we actually going to see decent $600 1080s or is it basically marketing speak for a $650 or $700 card?
Yes indeed, the board partner cards with aftermarket cooling solutions are also comming out.
And those might be priced lower based on msrp.
Next to that, as long as AMD does not bring out anything that could compete with the GTX1080.
Then Nvidia is simply going to tank on the GTX1080 as much as possible.
And you cant argue with that.
