Vega FE or 1080ti for GPU Passthrough

Because of the high prices atm, I have the choice between a 1080ti or a Vega FE. Both cards currently cost about the same. I do not want to pay 450€ or more for a RX 580.

Vega FE:

  • some pro features (no MxGPU sadly - maybe flashing a MI25 Bios would enable support?)
  • larger frame buffer (not really that important)
  • better non-windows support
  • pro-drivers AND Gaming drivers
  • no anti-passthrough policy
  • slower by 20-35% (gaming)
  • windows drivers not that good
  • ?has reset bug?

1080ti:

  • very good driver support under windows
  • probably has better resale value
  • custom designs available
  • can be passed through dynamically (as far as I know, using unbind and rebind)
  • the fastest gaming card available
  • gpu passthrough might be blocked completely in the future
  • not supported by nouveau

I want to use the card for 1440p 144hz and 4k 60hz gaming (GPU Passthrough) and (if possible) for experimenting with OpenCL/OpenGL/Vulkan under Linux.

The Vega reset bug I believe is fixed in 4.15… don’t quote me on that though.

Well I managed to get a 1070ti for almost MSRP - that will have to do for now. I probably will have no problem selling it if nvidia ever decides to ban passthrough completely…

You got extremely lucky. Just make sure you are on the latest drivers for that 1070 Ti cause it is a newer card.

depends on what type of broken you want:

nvidia makes you hide the VM from the drivers,

and AMD just plain breaks reinit on vega without intervention
