So I've decided with my next build here shortly that I would like to build what I'm calling my immersion hub. I'm waiting to see what happens with these VR solutions, but for the time being, let's say I'm picking up a Rift. I'm looking for headphones with a good 3D sound stage and directional audio to really throw myself into the game. I've seen several say the V-Moda M100s were great, but can only find music reviews. Anyone use them in a gaming type setup?
As you probably know, open-backed headphones will offer a better, wider sound stage, but won't isolate background noise as well. Closed-back headphones, like the M100s or my Beyerdynamic Custom One Pros won't be as good for directional audio... So the safe middle ground I would recommend would be the beyerdynamic DT 880s... The Custom One Pros, from experience are very good as well. I've never tried the m100s though.
I'm actually wearing mine right now. The sound stage is actually pretty good, probably one of the best for closed back headphones. In general I can make out where people are when playing fps games. Overall pretty good for gaming and if you buy a smartphone headphone/microphone voip adapter you can use the mic for gaming. Honestly though, they are very overpriced and you can find a pair of good open back headphones with a mod mic for a much better price.
As mentioned above for 3D sound and good soundstage a cheap open back headphone like the AD700x by Audio Technica will destroy the V- Modas in terms of positional accuracy. The new audio technica adg1 gaming headset is based of the 700x. Im planning to get those
I totally forgot Audio Technica was actually making a gaming headset. You're right, I'll probably see how those turn out.
