So, the old folks and religious nutjobs are at it again.
It’s official: Pornography is a public health crisis. At least in Utah.
The state proclaimed as much Tuesday after Gov. Gary Herbert (R) signed off on a resolution that deems pornography “a public health hazard” that can result in wide-ranging harm to individuals and society at large.
“We hope that people hear and heed this voice of warning,” Herbert said at a signing ceremony. “For our citizens know that there are real health risks that are involved and associated with viewing pornography.”
Todd Weiler, the resolution’s chief Senate sponsor, acknowledged the ridicule he received when he first unveiled the measure, which largely focuses on pornography’s impact on children.
“When my resolution language went public last January, I was mocked and scorned on the media,” said Weiler, a Republican. News of the resolution made it as far as Vietnam, Croatia, Australia and England, he said. “The world is watching, but it’s time; it’s time that we stand up and take back our communities.”
The resolution is non-binding and requires no public spending, so its impact rests on community action, Weiler said. Parents must make it safe for children to speak with them about pornography, he said. Communities must mobilize to limit its access, for example, in places that offer free wireless internet access.
Seems absurd to me. Yes some people do get addicted, I have no doubt. But if I remember correctly, a study somewhere found masturbation to be healthy for people.
From looking into it Only looks like theres legal problems if you don't report child porn Other than that just seems to be listing dangers Could possibly be ground work for some form of ban but doesn't seem like it's going to change much atm
Perhaps, although more like "experience living in a state full of stupid".
I lived in a county than had banned the sale of mixed drinks at restaurants. A group of young people finally got enough signatures on a petition together to have a vote done to remove the ban, and some moron wrote in a letter to the editor saying something along the lines of "Some people just want to have a glass of water with dinner". As though he believed allowing mixed drinks at restaurants would somehow prevent him from having a glass of water with dinner.
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers.
No, the restaurants in that county aren't allowed to serve any alcohol at all, even beer.
Shitty county. Most of the young people were moving away and the average age index thingie was like 40 years old or something.
Unless they actually lifted the ban. You could get drinks in the city of Danville, but not the surrounding county. And even then, no beer or liquor on sundays.
The idea of the next town having such radically different laws just seems to baffling. Like another area council or county might have different laws about bbqs in public parks but alchol to such a degree Just wut
Well, a city is governed by a different governing body than a county. Even if the county itself surrounds the city. Each can enact their own laws, so long as the laws are constitutional.
Perhaps, but still. If sexualizing someone causes you to devalue them, then you have some deep-seeded issues to begin with.
Although I guess today, in the PC world we have to say "weird ass fetishes".
Also, porn affecting you negatively suggests you have trouble maintaining a separation between reality and fantasy, same as the "video games cause violent behavior" argument.
True, I'm not trying to say sexualizing someone is bad. There's nothing wrong with appreciating beauty in that way. I'm suggesting that you begin to see women first for their body and second for their character. I mean every women. Passing women at work, school, public, etc, your first reaction is to mentally rate them and not even give a single thought to anything else about them... That's what it means to objectify women (or at least one application)
As for separating reality and fantasy...Some people say they are capable of fully separating the two but it's not true. Everything affects you to some degree and usually in unexpected ways and more than we originally thought.
I suppose that's all true, but there is still something to be said for physical attraction as far as intimate personal relationships go.
If your seeing their body first negatively impacts your interaction with people that you aren't in an intimate personal relationship, then yes, you have a problem.
