I’m wondering if i got pwned the transmission, or is support for 17.04 over?

Support for 17.04 ended on the 13th of this month. If you go to this link below you can see that the repo for zesty doesn’t exist anymore which is why you can’t download it.

http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/

If you really want to you can try adding the repo back manually from the old-releases mirror but I wouldn’t recommend it. best thing you can do now is migrate to a version that still has support.

Thanks @MichaelLindman, how do i do that?

On Ubuntu I beleive its:

sudo apt-get upgrade

Or you could just do a fresh install of a supported version instead.

I think it’s do-release-upgrade

If it doesn’t say there’s a new version then it’s because it’s set to only upgrade to lts release so you will need to change that. Can’t remember where the config is but it should be easy to look up.

Is this going to bork my install? What release is it going to? is it installing garbage; i mean unity?

Its a major OS upgrade so there’s always the possibility of that happening. This Is why I mostly do fresh installs when I upgrade to newer versions as it tends to be less hassle for me that way. I don’t use Ubuntu much anymore so I wouldn’t know what version it’ll upgrade to but it should prompt you before you do it.

should i have the generic kernel loaded? nm just fired off. see ya on the flipside

totem can’t run mp4s now

Try reinstalling it, I’ve had loads of trouble with media players on linux and that usually works.

You need to upgrade to the latest version of Ubuntu mate.
Take it from years worth of experience that maintaining a version of Ubuntu that has reached it’s designed EOL is a needlessly major task that is more pain in the arse than anything. Backporting packages, chasing PPA’s, etcetera.

I don’t know, I just tried 17.10 again … well, I installed it, just wanted to install brave browser through that GUI thing whatever it is called and it couldn’t … just couldn’t, because snapd something something no!

It is comical, every once in a while I touch ubuntu, it fucks itself in minutes, I wipe it from my system and go back to manjaro. This is like the fifth time that happened.

I don’t know how people deal with that. Or maybe I always click the one thing that doesn’t work but I’m the only one? FOR ME ubuntu is just terrible. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

For most people Ubuntu is terrible.

I am hoping that now that they don’t have to support unity that they will address their package management issues.

Exactly.
For far too long, quality that used to be associated with Ubuntu has gone down the drain, figuratively speaking, in favor of quantity. I cannot point out how many times this has been stated in the Linux Community at large.

Support isn’t over at all, its just the graphical update tool isn’t shit anymore and you should let it handle the updates for you :U
