Use for an ancient SonicWall security applience in 2024

So a short story probably a bit longer that it needs to be: I got my hand son an ancient “SonicWall PRO Internet Security Appliance”.

While the hardware appears to be in really good condition, I really don’t know anything about these things and a quick search didn’t result in any interesting applications (hacks) in the year of 2024.
It appears to have an ARM based “StrongAMR” processor, 3 10/100 NICs, a serial port and a free PCI slot and that’s about it.

I’m looking for some interesting ideas on what to do with my random hardware acquisition. If nothing else I can reuse the metal shell to build a RPi cluster or something of that nature.

  1. Discard internals
  2. fill with single board pc’s and WiFi dongles
  3. sniff WiFi traffic around your house (it is yours if it’s in your home, right?)
  4. ???
  5. profit

That’s a throwback, if I’ve ever seen one. Reminds me of some of my old small business clients.

I don’t think the board itself has much value, but you could definitely get some use out of that chassis and power supply. Maybe throw some SBCs into it and make a cluster?

Unless you are into “youngtimer-computing” (the step between modern and retro  ), I’d say awesome rack chassis for jank-free SBC-mounting.
