I am running HDD Dock with ZFS and woud like to have a ssd cache. If I run a separate ssd not attached to the dock, would metadata cache work?
Hey bud!
I’ve used USB attached HDD’s for pools with disposable data. For me, I have had a lot of success with reliability, and the pools I have run, have been fine.
But, USB is a flakey connection. It is really adaptable and useful, but limited compared to real I/O.
Personally, I only ever used plain rust, no special caches (apart from in memory caches)
So I honestly dont know.
I presume a SATA SSD mirror would speed up a rust USB array, but obviously the whole pool would fail if a vdev looses connection with the pool.
I presume you understand this, and good luck playing with it; yeah, bus connected cache would speed it up while it is up, and be prepared to have to remake everything
