My external usb 3.0 hdd keeps disconnecting,
my external hard drive and my usb ports have been working for years without problems, the only thing that changed lately is my GPU.
it keeps disconnecting on both usb 3.0 ports.
usb selective suspend setting is disabled.
"Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is turned off for every usb port.
usb 3.0 legacy support in the bios is disabled.
i have googled this several times and i am out of ideas, please help me.
Connect an oscilloscope to the power pin of the usb port. Watch for brown-outs or dipping voltages.
sorry, i dont have something like that.
does that happen on every usb 3 port?
does it only happen with that device?
does it happen on other computers?
Hate to say it, but this kind of thing is a symptom of a failing device. Take a look at the connector itself, pull it an see if you notice anything.
^you could also try a different device. @ipushpeople advice is good.
Also, you can use a tool like crystaldiskmark or something simpler like WDdiag. If you have a SMART failure, the drive is dead or on its way out. With externals, it can also sometimes be just the housing (although rare) that is going. Any external has a normal HDD in it of course.
Hope this helps.
I have the same problem with my usb 3.0 and my phone.
The issue is that the 'suspend pins?' dont push enough anymore.
try prying them up a bit and insert it again, my usb ports are just worn out and the problem is very annoying i need to do it every week almost (probably metal fatigue)
What are the problematic USB ports, the one in the front or the one in the back? Also are you using W10?
i just switched my hard drive to usb 2.0 and my headset to usb 3.0 to see which one the culprit is.
the hard drive looks perfectly fine in crystaldiskmark
highly unlikely since its both usb 3.0 ports and one of them was never used. but i will keep it in mind.
i haven't tried the front usb ports yet, and yes i'm using w10
my headset just turned off, so it has to be the usb 3.0 ports, i will try the other port now
Have you tried something simple, like replacing the USB cable from the drive to the USB port? I've had those go bad on external drives before.
i dont have another cable like that, but it happens to other devices too.
yes just confirmed, usb 2.0 headset that is plugged into either usb 3.0 port got disconnected too, has to be the port. the question now is, is the issue software or hardware based?
Have you tried updating your chipset drivers?
not in a long time, i should do that.
I've had a similar issue on my laptop but the USB3.0 just stopped working as a 3.0 port, only worked at 2.0 speed and current. After a Windows update is working properly again for whatever magic.
Try to boot the system with a live Linux distro and see if the issue persist or the controller just needs to be reset somehow.
^^Try this. I might suggest removing them completely and reinstalling the latest. Might be likely too if any other USB devices start disconnecting.
Worst case, your ports/mobo are going.
also try the back usb ports.
remember @wendell saying some about high power devices not getting power from front header
i dont use my front header
