Upgrading Partners PC?

So my GF currently owns a Pc with a i5 6500, and a Radeon RX 5600xt and she’s has been getting into Minecraft mods with friends and The Sims 4, and we can’t play games like Hell Let Loose and Squad together and on her 1440P 120hz display she had awful stutters and lags. also is on a Sata SSD drive. And looking for a new machine for her, that has A-RGB, silent fans and nice performance

Budget would be about $1200CAD. Any recommendations?

How much upgrade does she wants? The GPU is a fairly recent and decent card so she should be able to reuse it in a new system, at least until she has enough savings for a GPU upgrade. For starters, I’d suggest the AMD R7 7700, a suitable mainboard (no preference here, see what fits the bill as these AM5 boards come at quite a price) and at least 2x 16GB RAM (that’s DDR5, AM5 boards are not backwards compatible with (cheap!) DDR4, technically the platform is, just no-one implemented it).

Others may recommend either Intel 12 or 13th gen, but both are hotter and more power hungry then their equivalent AMD CPU, while costing more.

like Dutchy said,

a 650m board (not Asus) is usually on sale somewhere. regular 650 or 650e for a bit more future resistance.

an AM5 build (7600 CPU variant for an even more budget conscious gamer)

you could even go with a DDR5 48gb kit

and a radeon 7600 GPU (deals can be had on 6750XTs for not much more)

should be around 1000CAD

5600XT can still punch up, especially if the BIOS had been updated

Does the GF do anything else, outside of gaming, on this rig?
Is the plan a full package change-out, or just interior [platform] stuff?

Pretty much sims, Minecraft and the odd squad and he’ll let loose, so some demanding games and some not, she does the odd photoshop and adobe design but nothing too crazy.

I’d like to just get her on a modern platform as the 6950XT is getting cheaper so could get her one if needed in the future

And would like to do a whole upgrade really if possible as it would be easier for long run. As her current 5600XT / Windows seems to keep randomly uninstalling drivers so may try something new

My pick, as a starting point. Do be advised $1200 CND is a very tough bar to clear for 1440p 120 Hz, and you’ll probably need to upgrade your GPU at least once during the systems lifetime. At the same time, there is very little in this build I would cheap out on further, I consider all of this an absolute minimum for 1440p gaming today. Prices are in CND.

PCPartPicker Part List

Type Item Price
CPU AMD Ryzen 7 7700 $420.50
Motherboard MSI PRO B650M-A WIFI $199.99
Memory G.Skill Ripjaws S5 2x16 GB DDR5-6000 CL36 Memory $134.99
Storage Western Digital Black SN770 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 $149.97
Video Card Sapphire PULSE Radeon RX 7600 $388.99
Total $1294.44

I have not included a new case or power supply, your old one should work fine for this build. Biggest drawback is the Radeon RX 7600, which isn’t enough for fast 1440p gaming but can do most titles at 60 FPS. I would prefer a 6700 XT over the 7600 frankly, but that lands everything squarely outside your budget. I would quite frankly hold on to the 5600 XT and buy a 7700 XT when it comes out in 6-12 months. You do you however!
