Im going to be upgrading to the 870, but I was wondering, since my current core2duo is @ 3.0 GHz, and the 870 is only 2.93, should I see a performance drop on apps that don't take advantage of quad cores? Kind of confused on this :S
the i7 platform will make you jizz in your pants
The whole architechture in i7 870 is way better and faster than the e8400, you will see a performance increase everywhere.
I wonder tho, why the i7 870? Why not the new 1155 platform with a i7 2600k ?
(or 1366 with i7 950)

Well my brother bought the 870, along with 3 gb of ram and a evga P55 LE, and he needs money so he was going to sell it, but instead he said i could have the cpu/mobo/ram and then we could just sell mine. Only thing that sucks is that I have to buy a sound card, since my asus maximus II formula came with one, but if I take it out then the other pc will have no sound...
Anyway I'll switch everything out either today or tomorrow, maybe I'll post some pics ;D
As GreenSLi said, you shall see a big performance increase everywhere, and even in apps that do not support quad cores, the 70 mhz is not going to make a big drop in performance will happen. If anything, the faster arch should provide a substantial upgrade for you. You could also always overclock ;) Get a nice Corsair H50/H70 and some push/pull noctura's and you will have one of the best coolers around. I have saw the i7 870 easily hit 4.2-4.333 with little to no effort.
I was on the computer with the i7 today, and was looking at the system rating from windows 7.
It gave the CPU a 7.4 and the Ram a 5.5. Now on my current PC the cpu is a 6.4, but the ram is a 6.4. What kind of side effects should I see for using the other ram (I have no choice using my current ram as it's DDr2)
Both PCs have 3 GB of ram, the one in the i7 is here

Then in my PC i have these 2 sticks:

And one stick from this pack

wait, what? the i7 platform didn't make you jizz your pants :?

well really the only good thing in his pc right now is the i7, and the mobo i guess is decent XD but i couldnt tell because the windows 7 install is really screwed up and it only has a 9600 gt in so playing games ins't comparable to my gtx 260 ^^
still confused about the ram though :S
I'm not familiar with Sandy Bridge, but I do know that the old I7's have triple channel DDR3. So coming from DDR2, to DDR3, you will see a performance increase. Especially in bandwidth because of the extra channel.
The architecture is all around better. Everything should make you jizz with speed.

Doesn't the motherboard have to have like 6 slots for the memory if it's triple channel? Because the one he has only has 4 slots ;S
edit never mind, it is only dual channel atleast that's what it said on neweggs details

That's not a "Real" i7 platform. the socket 1366 (chipset x58) is the one with the real i7
s.
It's just the higher performance 1156 ones that are called i7.
If you want tri channel memory, X58 1366 board is the way to go.
hate to say it but your borther baught the wrong ram kit for that motherboard >.<
1156 motherboards are dual channel where your brother baught triple channel, i'm not saying it won't work but your gonna have to put one stick in a different channel then the other 2, your just better off buying a 4gb dual channel kit cause there less than $50 these days and i'd also recommend this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145218&cm_re=corsair_4gb_ddr3-_-20-145-218-_-Product
and that should easily beat your previous ram score on windows 7.
Yeah, Irish guy got a point ^^
Not that I believe windows score counts at all, but my DDR3 6gb tri channel scores 7.8 in windows.. However I can only use 4.5 gb ram because of a mobo defect.
Alright I see that with the memory now :S but my current memory setup isn't tri channel also, I should still only see performance gains right? I imagine I will upgrade in the near future anyway.
well if anything the corsair kit that i put a link up for would beat your current score considering your current set is ddr2 at 800mhz where as the corsair is ddr3 at 1333mhz and it would beat it without of a shadow of a doubt in gneral perfomance.
(PS windows 7 scores dosn't uaually mean anything with high end gear)
Alright this should be my last post from this motherboard/cpu, swappin parts in like 10 minutes!
good luck
Alright so I finally got everything working, sort of, except my sound card but fuck that thing finally this mofo is working!! It's a pain in the ass switching computer parts over LOL, now I have to try some games! Maybe 3dmark.. hmm
Thought we were talking about 1366, sorry guise. Hehe
