Upgrading From an I7 870

I recently got and gaming computer in a trade for a dell laptop and $300 the problem is it has and and old I7 870 and i would like your recommendation on an cpu, motherboard, ram, and cpu cooler upgread around $550 any brand will do i just want whats best for the money and it will be for gaming, i already have and Amd 7970 so im all set with that thanks for the help great chanal ~ Luke

I am assuming you are still wanting to use this computer for gaming. For a budget build I would recommend the AMD platform. I put together a quick build on Newegg that follows as such.

MB: ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX ($189.99)

RAM: Corsair Vengeance 4GB [2 x 2GB] ($51.99)

CPU: AMD FX-4300 Vishera 3.8GHz [4.0GHz] ($119.99)

This brings your toal before shipping to $361.97. Which leaves you some wiggle room for a cpu cooler. I did not include a cooler because i do not know if you want Air or Liquid Cooling and i do not know what case you have. I personally use an Intel rig so I am not the go to guy for current AMD platforms, but I do belive that this is a good starting point.

The old  I7 870 is a btter cpu than the FX4300 no point going backwards.

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler ($74.99 @ Newegg)

Motherboard: Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($109.99 @ Newegg)

Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($62.05 @ Newegg)

Total: $427.02

ok thanks and an intel alternative? so i can compare

i5 will be your Intel gaming option. the 8350 and i5 trade blows in different games. A current i7 would be too much.

Honestly, your current CPU is fine for another generation.

That and it's hard to get an i5, decent motherboard, RAM, and a cooler for under $550

ok fare enuf im just wonder how much better would the fps be with an newer cpu

Wait for all these next-gen games to emerge before deciding. I'm lead to believe that next-gen games might be optimised for AMD hardware, that might be a deciding factor. It's early days, we do not know how these future games are going to utilise PC hardware. Your current CPU isn't a significant bottleneck at this time.

Upgrading to many of these new CPUs will provide a boost, but I don't think it will be worth the expense. That's just my opinion. Next-gen gaming results may change my view.

ok thanks for the help :P
