Upgrading an OLD Laptop

Hi Everyone
I’m hoping for a bit of help and advice, I was dismantling a very old laptop i have (HP/Compaq Presario 2104EU) and while i was cleaning it out, i noticed i could change out the CPU, which i was surprised about, for a laptop.
It’s currently got a Mobile Celeron 2.4ghz CPU (SL75J) and i would like to upgrade to something a little more capable as i never did like the performance of Celeron CPUs (Seriously, Who does?) I just wanted to use it for older software i have, and i wasn’t intending to spend a lot of money on it.
I have done some research into a replacement CPU, though i don’t know as much about Intel CPUs as i do AMD CPUs, especially with Pentium 4. (Hence this thread)
I Was looking to replace it with a Mobile Pentium 4-M 2.4Ghz CPU as the TDP was the same at 35w on the current CPU. Would any other CPUs be compatible? (Pentium M, Mobile Pentium 4) I had doubts about the Mobile P4/Pentium M because of the higher FSB (400 for my current CPU/533 for the Pentium M/Mobile P4)
Would a desktop version CPU work for this laptop, even with the higher TDP?
Do Mobile P4s really perform better than Mobile Celerons, even at the same FSB speed?
(That’s what i’ve always known about them)
Thanks for any help even with such an old system.

do you know what socket it uses also most desktop processors wont work as mobile cpus are designed for laptops to be more power effect and to run off a battery so if you put a desktop cpu in it may not fit or it could draw to much power and either drain the battery faster or fry the motherboard personally I use a dual core celeron on my Linux server there ok of course their not the best but if you use linux with something like fluxbox as the desktop environment its barely noticeable even on my old Pentium d system I rarely push 100% cpu load when running programs like servers

From what i can tell, it's based on the Socket 478, but that's where i get a bit puzzled, CPU World seems to suggest it's Socket 478/mPGA478B, and when comparing to a list on Wikipedia, it's saying my CPU is PPGA478.

I'm mostly going to use my laptop for Windows XP 32-Bit as the laptop can only support up to 1GB of ram.

What do you want to use the laptop for? I would start there :)

I have some older laptops that I just slapped the max RAM in that they would take, a small SSD, and I hope to get something going on FreePBX or other stuff that I can just run on such a rig.

I wouldn't consider swapping CPUs or GPUs out on a laptop, just as it gets tricky/risky and it will probably end up cheaper just pocking up something second-hand instead.

I'm intending to use this laptop for messing around with MIDI music, some older Direct X 7 Games.
It's only the CPU i can upgrade, the GPU is an ATI Radeon IGP 340M. (I think it's similar to a Radeon 7000 GPU, not an HD version)
Keeping the TDP in mind, would i be better to opt for a 2.4Ghz Mobile Pentium 4-M CPU as long as i can get a second hand one for cheap?

if you are just going to be using xp I would recommend install windows posready 2009 its basicly the same as xp but more lightweight and has support until 2019
