Sup people, with the massive price drops on AMDs R9 290 I was thinking of picking one up at Christmas, however ive only got an FX-4350 at the moment so I will need an upgrade their too, im pretty positive my motherboard (AMD 970a-ds3) will only support upto a 6350 without burning it out so the question is, will the 6350+r9 290 be able to cope on modern games, at least medium settings I guess on most games on a 3x1080p at a playable framerate?
I know the 8350 would be ideal for that GPU but I dont have the money for a motherboard upgrade too. Cheers in advance for any help.
I have the fx6300, ASUS R9 290 direct cu ii, with an ASrock 970 mobo and I have no problems maxing out all my games on a set up with 3 monitors. I think the 6300 is a great choice because it overclocks great and I haven't had any problems with it. Plus they are super cheap at the moment; I live by a Micro Center and the fx6300 is less than $80. You will have no problem maxing out any modern game.
Really? Thats great, I have an H80i but I dont know if my motherboard will allow me to overclock much, ive never overclocked before either, like what would I expect to get it up to with that motherboard? Ive just got my 4350 at stock 4.2Ghz
the R9 290 will be a good choice from what i no is that with 3 monitor at 1080P will do just fine with that cpu b/c its more dependent on vram then cpu and the r9 290 or 290x has 4gb of vram so you will do just fine with your setup
i got a fx4300 overclocked to 4.543ghz and a r9 280x 3gb vram and i have a huge 32in 1080P tv its not a pc monitor neather which doesnt matter really with a addon monitor on the side to keep track of my temps and ram usage inc and i have no issues running game at all even tho the gpu isent being hurt by the secondery screen since the game is only running on the 32in
Just for a daily overclock I use 4.2 ghz at 1.4 v opposed to the stock clock of 3.5 gh. and it works awesome, I'm sure you would be able to do that no problem.
Hmm, would there be any damage if I was to hook it up with the RM550 and it not be enough or would it just nor turn on? Or turn off once the usage got too high
If you overclocked both your processor and graphics card you could pull more wattage then your PSU has. This is somewhat unlikely as you would have to have it all running at 100% so that's more of a synthetic benchmark problem. As per you question would it damage anything; that depends, you have a well made PSU so its more likely to trip and force a shutoff without damaging your components if its overdrawn. Even so, running this kind of setup on that PSU will probably shorten its lifespan and as it gets older/used more its ability to deliver power lessens so overtime it could become a danger. My advice upgrade your other components and wait for a good deal on a 650-850+ PSU then upgrade that.
Thanks, I may even be able to buy a PSU next week, il go for an XFX 650w or something, pretty cheap yet reliable. So a rundown, buy an FX-6300, buy an R9 290, buy 3 monitors, get good FPS on an eyefinity setup. Is the plan
