So I’ve been looking at upgrading my gaming pc, specifically the display/monitor.
I’ve been constrained to using only a 24 inch class 1080p display for a very long time due to my room layout and the computer desk.
The room is smallish but it’s the computer desk which is over 25 or perhaps 30 years now.
It is a hutch style that worked out great due to all the shelves and such, in fact I used it back in my Amiga days so there you go.
Now due to the hutch style it is both heavy and size constrained with the display it can fit into the opening on the left hand side.
Basically I’ve been looking for any 1440p or 4k display in the 24 inch class but they basically start at the 27 inch class and these are about an inch too wide to fit.
So I either have to move my gaming rig into a spare room with no AC where is there an fairly large open computer desk or continue using my 1080 display.
Of course I could decide on removing my old hutch desk for something else too but again this will require a lot of work due to how I sort of pidgeon holed it into the L shaped room.
I would really love to upgrade to a 4K display for sure but really want to get some feedback on what others have done if you are in a similar scenario.
It would be nice to have both my gaming rig and my workstation stretch their GPU legs so to speak.
The reason most 1440p / 4k screens are 27"+, is because 27" 1440p at a desk will make it very hard to spot the pixels, at 4k it is almost impossible at 27". Thus there is very little need to go lower than 27" in size.
However, you could try to make the impact of your gaming rig smaller with a vertical tower style (outputs at bottom), like the Fractal Design Mood:
Or flatten it a bit with a console style:
Or a sandwich style:
Or just… You know… Smaller?
Sorry about the FD shilling here, if you have more special needs I know of other cases and manufacturers too, that support mATX and even ATX without sacrificing too much space - though some sacrifices have to be made and quite a few are not readily available, with months of preorder.
The point of retina-scale displays is to not see the pixels. I have two of these LG 24UD58 screens: 180-ish PPI 8bit 4k IPS panel with max 60Hz refresh, one DP and two HDMI inputs – do they sell them near you?
I have replaced my Dad’s desk with a two-foot by eight-foot folding table and placed my tower computer case on the floor, which gives me room to use my 27-inch monitor and my 48-inch 4 K TV on the table. Maybe @BigBodZod could do the same.
Outside of notebooks, never seen a 1440p display, being under 27in
Shrinking down the pc pkg, IF a viable option, to roughly maintain the desk environment

I am in a similar situation, and have come to the conclusion that my only way forward is to fix the desk situation. Either by replacement or modification. Luckily it’s not a full “hutch” design, it just has wing platform things flanking the monitor space. My plan is to take those off and cut them down. Problem with THAT solution is that I’m an apartment dweller without the necessary tools or workspace to actually do that relatively simple task, so I’m thinking take them with me next time I go to visit my parents.
Without knowing the full details of your setup, getting creative with a monitor arm might be a potential solution. I might end up doing that as well as the retrofit. Price of a metal stick to mount a monitor on always turned me off so I’ve always just used the included stand, but a little more flexibility to reposition on the fly as desired might be nice.
