Upgrade or new build?

Hi all,

 

Found this form from the YouTube vids and thought i'd come and see if i can get some advice.

Current Build:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 Stepping (2.4GHz 1066MHz) Socket 775 L2 8MB Cache (2x4MB (4MB per core pair) Retail Boxed Processor 131950

Video Card: GTX 470 2GB (don't remember exact one - at work right now)

CPU Cooler: Stock

Case: Cooler Master CM Storm Scout Mid tower

1 x ASUS P5KC AiLifestyle Series iP35 Socket 775 8 channel audio ATX Motherboard 132275

Memory: OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800Mhz/PC2-6400 Memory GOLD DUAL CHANNEL Unbuffered CL5(5-5-5-18) 146049

I have a few 1TB or 500GB Mechanical HD's installed, all 7200 RPM, various manufacturers

 

Not sure at this point whether to start a new build project or just upgrade the existing PC.
Can you offer any advice?

I belive that its not worth upgrading this rig. You'll spend quite a bit of money on getting legacy pieces such as DDR2 memory and other hardware compatible with little performance gain. Just start a complete new rig and you'll be fine. What's the budget?

Haven't set a budget.. I usually look at what is the "best bang for your buck" components and then go from there.

Happy to take any reccomendations you may have.  :)

Well, if you don't plan on spending lots of money i'd certainly recomend AMD's FX solutions for the CPU. They have the best price/performance ratio and really deliver great budget gaming horsepower. If you are willing to spend more, go for an I5 3570K. The best solution for gaming today. As for GPU... well its hard to tell without a budget. For around $310 you can either an GTX 660ti or an HD 7950. Depending of the games you play one will perform better than the other. Thats up to you. For the Ram, get either OCable 1600 Mhz or sock 1866 Mhz. Mobo get any reliable brand with the most recent chipset and you'll be fine. PSU, at least 650W with 80 plus bronze certificate. I guess this is all the advice i can give you without a budget. When you chose ur budget, please tell, it will be way easier to assist you. :P

i only play SWTOR and Planetside 2 right now.

i have a couple of grand disposable right now but i don't want to blow it all on a PC..

i can usually get a decent rig built for ~£500 ish.

Don't need monitor/keyboard and i've gotten by this far with a 2 button scrollwheel mouse :P

 

from reading on here the 3570K seems to be the way to go and maybe the 7850 GPU from the $1300 rig video. 

If you want to spec something up then i'll probably go buy it :P

for best performance/money

FX-6300, 8GB DDR3 1600, Biostar TA990FXE (best 990FX board under $210), XFX double D 7870, Thermaltake V3, Hyper 212, any 80+ bronze 550-600W PSU

I would just get a cpu cooler for like $30-40 and overclock your cpu to 3 GHZ +. your hardware is old but still decent then you can test out see if you need more or not.
