So I installed SteamOS on my main rig and got everything set up. Then I moved the HDD into an old optiplex gx620 and it starts up relatively OK. The checking for updates progress screen are graphically fine, but then the steam big picture video starts and that is where things start going south..
I see this screen:

What does this mean? Before, I couldn't even get to this (i got the steam logo with weird artifacts around it) but this was when Intel hardware wasn't even supported. My hardware should be supported as I have a "64 bit capable processor" and intel graphics.
UPDATE:
OK so today I installed Ubuntu 14.10 (after realising the installation I first used was 12.10 which refused to install anything) so now I have a steam box to stream from my main rig. I now realise that the dell optiplex gx620 is not even up to the task of running steam big picture..
I think I need to upgrade.. (Little comparison - I installed Half Life and it averaged around 25 fps so yeah...) So, do I get a cheap low profile GPU or a cheap CPU? Currently it has a Pentium D at 2.8 GHz and an integrated 945G. Memory is at 4GB.
All I need to do is stream from my main rig and run steam big picture.
Any help? Thanks
