[Update 5-25-18] The Harvest has Begun! YouTube takes down channel for gun content

Update 5-25-18, He’s back!

This morning gun YouTuber Bloke on the Range has had his channel taken down.

And fifteen minutes later his appeal denied

What is really interesting is Bloke is one of the most mild mannered youtubers creating firearms content with more of a focus on the history, this guy is no FPS Russia shooting trucks full of tannerite.

We’ve already experienced the adpocalypse and have accepted that YT ad dollars is no longer a secure source of income for a channel but now we have to fear that someone will deem the content we create or consume is not fit for YouTube.

I understand YouTube is publicly traded company (Google) and is responsible to it’s shareholders not it’s users and they can do whatever the hell want on their platform but that doesn’t mean we don’t have an influence on it’s policies.

Maybe it’s time we start seriously considering diversifying where you get our content from (there is never going to be a YT replacement imo) as there are plenty if options out there.

InRangeTV has famously started posting it’s videos on PornHub as well as promoting p2p distribution through BitChute.

What do you guys think? Should we build our own YouTube with blackjack and hookers?

Seeing how fast he was denied screams bot to me

Since idiots have actually shot themselves in the past for youtube videos, I can see why advertisers would be sensitive to this. And since that is how the money gets made, YT is kicking the stuff out. Their place, their rules.

Probably, but the initial takedown was an SJW and then bot instructions to auto deny appeal.

Have you read the post? This isn’t about ad dollars and Bloke’s channel focuses more on history.

I expected it but this is a very strange place to start.

It doesn’t matter. Youtube is a privately owned service that you have the privilege of using.

I know that a lot of people are heavily dependant on it, but this was the danger of becoming dependant on it that we’ve been warning about for almost a decade.

I’ve already acknowledged this fact in the op

Sure seemed like you were backtracking though.

It’s probably some SJW bullshit, but the fact is that they can do whatever they want.

Yes.

Of course it is.

YT doesn’t care.
Advertisers don’t want to see guns anywhere near their ads.
So guns have to go. All of them.

Yes and it’s our job to make sure it backfires heavily on Google. Cancel youtube music, Google play music and YouTube premium subscription.

implying I pay google a dime.

More accurately though, this feels like virtue signaling.

They’re not actually accomplishing anything other than pissing people off, but they’re signaling to the world how much they hate guns.

As much as groups lobbying to get rid of certain content have sway over YouTube’s decisions users have just as much power if they bothered to organize or seek content elsewhere. It’s not like companies haven’t backtracked on these kinds of decisions before due to user pressure.

Never subbed any of these, ive never met a person who has.

We have a winner here!

It’s exactly that and the shit thing is YT is big enough to get away with pissing this many people off, I wish alternatives weren’t such shit.

I agree. If I can get content from a person I enjoy on a platform other than youtube, by golly, I’ll do it!

I think that it’s not so much about alternatives being shit. They’re perfectly functional, but without all the content, they’re not going to attract consumers.

Still waiting for floatplane to kick up.

How many creators are on board so far? LTT and BitWit are all I know of.

I’m 100% interested in FloatPlane.

Looks like bitwit, techdeals, LTT

It’s sad, but unfortunately YouTube (and papa Google) have total control of the platform. I always thought it was strange people would invest everything and become dependent on the platform as a source of income. For content and hobbies that are looked down upon in the current social climate (guns in general at this point) it’s no wonder YouTube would be purging channels.

I’m subscribed to quite a few firearms related channels myself. I wish there was a more well known alternative they could move to. Pornhub isn’t a realistic option, dtube looks like it isn’t doing well. What other options are there. How can we direct attention to them?

Youtube is doing this because of ad money. If people had youtube red subscriptions there would be no reason to take down these channels.

Ads don’t pay much so youtube is desperate. I can understand the desire to punish them for playing SJW, but the simple truth is that cancelling subscriptions will only make matters worse. This is a textbook example of a death spiral.
