Upcoming Q+A: Post Your Questions | Level One Techs

I recently realized we haven't done a community Q+A in.... pretty much ever. We used to do Q+A for 19+ patrons; but now we do a monthly podcast for that tier. Since that change, the Q+A has fallen by the wayside entirely. So what better way to start the new year then by answering the questions from everyone- patrons and regular subscribers alike?!

Wendell The L1 Three+quakecon 2018?

Obligatory…plans for 2018, still going to penguicon? I’m debating whether to or not because of all the pick your pronoun stuff from last year.

Also wolfleben and Big Al mods possibility?

Gonna add things as I think of them

What phones do you guys use? What would you look for in a phone? Do you root? LineageOS? Custom ROM written in Python on a cold winter’s day?

SECOND ONE: Are you guys 1337 haxx0rz? Any recommendations on certifications? Looking to do an OSWP this year (in the summer, after I finish my bachelor) and I’d love to know your opinion (or anyone else’s) on the matter and applicability of the cert.

This month I’ll be changing my 10-year old PC to a shiny new one based on Ryzen 1700, B350, 16G 3200 DDR4 and GTX 1080. Now I’m not much of a gamer, but given the specs, that’s one of the ideas. Windows is fine and all, but with this move I also plan to move to Linux… So basically the idea is to run as much games natively (via Steam) as possible. But, since not all games will do that (say Fallout 4), I’m left with basically two options Wine and VM (don’t want to tinker with passthrough). So the question is, have you played with gaming on a VM (vmware) and what can I expect, what to look out for? Oh and I plan to do it (plans can change) on a Debian / MATE GUI (just mentioning it since you seem to prefer Fedora for this)

Just to throw it out there as the obvious thing, The Break Up, and possibly covering some accusations on Qain?

Will we be getting ryzen laptop reviews?

Also I had a topic on the forum, is it possible to get System76 or other Linux specific vendor reviews?

Thanks for all the hardwork, love the videos.

What is your favorite platform and environment combo for development, designing, and working?

Just a few…

  • Where do you see L1T going this year?
  • Do you continue to see Yotube as a viable platform this year or are you considering other options? (e.g. alternative platforms, or as some have rolled their own (geek and sundry’s Alpha, LTTs floatplane , etc.)
  • How do you manage your time?
  • What non tech/gadget channel/person/site/other do you take time to read/watch/absorb?
  • Favourite thing of 2017?
  • Favourite book you’ve read of 2017 (or all time).
  • What one thing should people know how to do?

Love the great work with gpu passthrough, but also got any project/videos planned which are more server/networking oriented? (Like the pfsense and nextcloud guides?)

I’d love to see that. Also, any privacy hardware reviews! Libreboot how-to narrated by L1T would be CASH.

Any plans for another 10Gig Ethernet video ? Now that we have cheap 10Gig Ethernet (RJ45) cards available in the market, any plan to review ?

Can you recommend good 10G managed switch for home office (non-sfp. rj45 only) at a reasonable price ( maybe 2/4 10Gig ports and rest 4/6 1Gig ). I am currently using link aggregation with 2 port Gigabit Ethernet on two machines. I would like to upgrade to 10G, also want to get rid of cable clutter.

Do you think we will see any 10G products announced on CES ?

I think the beauty of the Hayes BBs retrospective is uncomparable, the grinding sweat and tears of hardware pass-through is far beyond any ‘hat’s-off’ and deserving of some award that must be granted at some point. These accomplishments already set you apart from the rest and deservedly so. Let’s look forward to … hmmm… something new. I walk up to a powered off machine, flip the power switch, and I am exactly were I shut down. Exactly and precisely, all programs, tabs, variables, syncs, from when the power was cut. Now think, NVMe, NVDIMM, and the progression of persistent memory.

The end of boot …

There are programming language challenges that are in the works. Let’s presume those small hurdles will be cleared … so dream on …
