okay guys imm from india and most of friends study in the u.s so im asking them to get an iphone or any other phone from there. i wanted to nkow more about unlocking the phone and is it safe to unlock it? I also wanted to know if my friend gets it on contract and unlocks it does he still have to pay the monthly fee? if you could answer my question or refer me to some links that wu be awesome!

c00kie, are you referring to iphones locked on specific carriers or just the Locked nature of the iPhone itself?
there is different activation types.. there is the initial phone activation where it wont let you into iOS without a SIM card of certain types... that is easy to bypass. there is the carrier lock which depending on the firmware modem version can suck... I cut my carrier sim and used SAM aka subscriber artifical module to trick Apple into activating my SIM on a different carrier... You'll probably have to use GEVEY sims or something like this because tricking Apple's servers into activating your phone on another carrier isn't easy like it used to be.. Then there is the jailbreak... Use redsn0w or Evasion... The untethereed exploitation methods for Evasion will probably be closed on the next iOS update. I dunno what monthly fee you're talking about, if you mean monthly fee for service then yes... All this stuff above isn't phreaking free service it's simply running your personal phone on a different carrier.
