Hey fourms, I am in a interesting situation. I have an HDD and A SSD. Windows is currently on the HDD. I want to move the windows installation (but none of the files) to the SSD. Is this possible? I know Ill have to reinstall windows on the SSD, but I want it to be off the HDD.
P.S. There is a second HDD with ubuntu on it so I will be dual booting.
The edit helped clear the situation up alot btw so thanks, but I am still not 100% sure what you are asking. Do you want to keep your installed programs, and migrate your install to the SSD?
What I want is to keep all the files I have on my HDD and Migrate all the installations (programs and windows) To the SSD. If I need to reinstall all the programs I can.
Ah ok. You should be able to just use a HDD -> SSD migration tool, or just a fresh install on the SSD then just move the files accross from the other drive (there is nothing stopping you) - assuming you do not have any drive encryption and have the sata ports. If you do not like the sound of that, then you could reduce your windows partition size, create a cross-platform partition (so something like FAT32) and push your data to that.
You could also use dd to just straight copy the partition to the SSD (after likely reducing the partition size) but I would be careful with dd as it has no safety checks, hence the name, destroyer of disks
What HDD to SSD migration tool? And What im trying to avoid is having to reinstall all my programs, But if I have to I can. And How would I get windows off the HDD if I just do a clean install? I really do not have much experience with moving around partitions and what not, I usually focus more on hardware.
I use dd myself, but here is a list of some drive cloning software https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_disk_cloning_software If you have had the windows install for a while, it would be worth while doing a fresh install though, as windows will run much faster. If you have issues cloning your drive, then we can talk about reducing partitions but you shouldn't have to touch it
Now I have finally gotten around to doing a fresh install of windows on the ssd. Is there a way to be able to still run the programs that are on the other drive or install the programs I want on the SSD without having to re-download the program. The ssd is only so big and I dont want to install games like GTA because GTA is 60 gbs and the ssd is 120
