This is irritating seeing as how the wifi in my house is working, but my desktop that is wired into the modem is saying that it is "Limited" and I cannot use the Internet. I was literally in the middle of watching a youtube video when this happened. How do I fix this? Restarting the router didn't do anything.
After running the the windows trouble shooting, it says "Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP configuration.
I don't understand how this happened when it was literally working 5 mins ago, and every day before. I fucking have homework to do, and I dont want to do it on my tablet. Please help
Well, after just waking up this morning, I just did a system recovery and it seemed to have solved the problem, I hope this problem will not return when I get home from work today.
I've had similar issues in the past. The best way I have found to solve this issue within a minute is to open the Device Manager (Win+X on Win 8 and then M) and simply disable / re-enable your ethernet adaptor. This acts in a similar way to using the ipconfig /flushdns command in the cmd window, except it clears the IP table the OS had generated when first connected to the network, causing it to get the information again. Not an ideal fix, but the best I have found so far.
I've read this, but the whole unplugging/plug in the router didn't do the trick, even with a hard reset as well, but if the problem does come back, I will be sure to try what you guys mentioned, thank you. Will these work on windows 8.1 though? Just trying to make sure, cause I spent almost 2 hours trying to fix it last night, and I ended up having to do my homework on a frickin tablet, haha.
Running WIndows 8.1 Pro on a desktop wired via Cat6 through an unmanaged 8 port Gigabit switch, through a powerline adaptor to the router, I found that the only way I could fix it was through the disable / re-enabling of the network adaptor while the machine was running and plugged in. I had tried power cycling the router, the PC, the switch, the powerline adaptors, unplugging and replugging the cable. The only way I could get it to give an IP address again was to reset the network adaptor. About an hour was wasted doing those tests...
It is really annoying this "unidentified network" or "limited access". You should first try the built-in windows "Troubleshoot Problems" by clicking the network icon in the system tray else check whatever you are using "Obtain an IP address automatically" or a customized addresses.(source: How to Fix Unidentified Network/No Internet Access/Limited Access).
