Ultrabook Shopping (Closed XPS 15 9570 selected)

So I have been shopping for an Ultrabook for the wife, not really a lot of good 2700u systems I can see (min 16gb ram preferred more) Another option for cpu are i7-8750H / i7-8650U

Ones currently under consideration are
Lenovo thinkpad x1 carbon 6th gen (has 4xpcie 3.0) available
Dell XPS 15 9570 (Also finally 4xpcie 3.0)

What other ones do you guys like, this system will dual boot windows and linux as an FYI

for dualboot and linux compatibility the dell is the better option since they also sell the same exact laptops with Ubuntu pre-installed instead of M$ Windoze

Plus, I like the screen on the xps line much better (the infinityedge model)

In have a Dell XPS 9570 w/ a Gigabyte GTX 1070 external, amazing combo, but you are probably better off getting a Gigabyte Aero 15x if you are looking for power and size in the same package.

Dell is still a great option an is probably preferred for dual booting.

My old Acer Aspire S7 392 has been amazing with linux as well, so I will assume that will carry over to the latest model of that laptop if they have one with the 8th gen U procs.

I have an old xps 13 there was issues even with it being the linux version seems to work fine now

She has a 5820k desktop with a 970 so wouldnt need it for desktop duty

The carbon x1 has a nice 1440p screen option, but crappier specs for the money

I know, right? I’m so disappointed they’re not building more, but I’ve got a feeling Intel’s bribing OEMs again…

What sort of priorities do you have?

I’m not seeing any requirements or preferred features, outside 16GB+ of ram.

Lenovo has a sale going on now to compete with Amazon Prime day.

X1c’s are on sale.

I want one. But still can’t afford it, even with the 32% off, cashback and signup bonus.

I honestly dont know exactly what her future job will be yet, not really concerned with budget I’m fine with up to $2000, but shooting for 13-15" pref on the 15 side and ultrabook because she wants something light I put the 16gb ram min because she is a tab monster and with being in the data science / machine learning ara she will most likely need cores and ram

Yep nice discount on it

Have a look at the HP EliteBook 745 G5. I want one, but I have too many computers already.

Oh, you can knock a bit off the price by ordering it with FreeDOS installed instead of Windows 10!

Not 100% on HP as we have some of their workstation laptops and have had tons of issues with them

I’ve got no problems with my 845 G3. What sort of problems do you have?

Keyboards failing, cooling issues on a sample size of like 10 laptops probably 3 have had issues

While the specs look good the build quality seems super cheap seems like its from 2008

Let me talk to my desktop support guy and have him send failure rates.

I wouldn’t quite go that far, but it’s definitely not an XPS or a macbook.

Yeah everything but the bottom and the speaker/hinge look good imo a bit thick probably(she carries a macbook air currently)

Is the ram on the 15 soldered on?

iirc yes, I’d have to take my xps 15 apart again top find out

Due to comment below, imma take the base off now.

You’ll be hard pressed to match an air.

If you want AMD, I really think HP probably makes the most customizable laptop for the Ryzen Mobile solutions at the moment.

Last I checked, no.

Looking at the service manual, it has a “removing memory modules” section.
