Hey Fellow Tek'ers I am having a little dilemma. I want to upgrade my monitor and was looking at this one:
I saw The Tek review it, and besides the tempered glass in the front (which can be removed) I am pretty much sold on it. However...
Upon reading through the description on this particular ebay listing, which i might add is from Dream-Seller who I believe is where Logan got his from. I came across the section for dead pixels. It says something about a pixel perfect version. Ok so I wrote dream-seller and asked about if it was possible to get a pixel perfect version and how much more would it be? I also asked about getting the monitor without the glass on the front .. which I have heard is possible from the manufacturer now.
This is where it gets a little confusing so bear with me lol
When I asked the ebay seller those questions I mistakenly was asking him about this monitor:
When he wrote back he said that, sorry but you cannot get a pixel perfect version for his monitor.. Well I thought awww crap I asked about the wrong monitor.. So I tried to explain the situation to the ebay seller (dream-seller) that I mistakenly asked about the Crossover 404k and meant to ask those questions about the A399U..
Well when he wrote back he said that the A399U and the Crossover 404k are the same monitor ... This is where I'm confused.. How are they the same monitor?! One is 40" the other is 39.5" and they both have different model names lol ... Not to mention one is over $600 where the other is $550.. I am also kinda urked because his description states in the dead pixel section that there is a pixel perfect version .. but he said there isn't.. and then I go on ebay and find this:
So its like .. wait a minute now.. So my question.. if you could follow all that is
Is the UHD A399U and the Crossover 404k the same monitor? and is it possible to get a pixel perfect version.. and which one is better for gaming? I know $550 - $650 isn't much to some people, but if I'm going to spend that kinda cash.. I want to make sure it has zero dead pixels. Also to date deam-seller has still not answer my question about weather I can get a A399U without the glass... which I also might add I HAVE found one on ebay who sells the A399U without its glass aka "matte finish".. but again I arrive back at trying to find a pixel perfect "matte finish" A399U.
For anyone who is curious the monitor I have now is a 10yr old 30" dell LCD, which is losing its brightness and I believe is on its way out.
Thanks for any help guys, I am honesty trying to figure all this out, searching google has netted me very little in terms of Crossover 404k VS A399U..
Thank you for the reply Ya that was the other ebay seller I mentioned who you can get the "matte finish" from. I may just get mine from him as well .. I just worry about the dead pixels .. I know there is nothing I can do about it if it comes with 5 dead pixels, which I guess is passing standard.
HAHA I wish it was that easy my friend. But I have A.D.D. when it comes to things like that .. Like I said $550 may not be much to some, but if I'm gonna sink that I want close to perfect as I can get :) Being its 2015 there shouldn't even be a thing as dead pixel IMO.
although I am still confused .. whats the difference between the UHD A399U and the Crossover 404k? is deam-seller right? .. are they the same? .. is the 404k just an upgraded version of the A399U? Mostly I'm just curious at this point haha
Hi ! i have both.........I do not think they are the same, however as Wendell indicated it is possible that the driving circuits or other circuits are different. I like both, however I prefer the A399U for gaming, seems faster and the display is not as aggressive. (contrast wise) Please note all comments are made with the A399U de-glassed. I had to de-glass because of what they call micro-dust, it is actually a smoke type deposit that resembles very much to the smoke type deposits seen on the glass of a scanner after a couple of years. de-glass is a must, display is a lot better. (IMO). OK what do you want to know ???????????
Hey Maxcat ty for the reply :) You pretty much answered all my questions .. and yes whatever version I decide to get "pixel perfect" "matte finish" I will de-glass .. unless its the "matte finish" of course :P Where did you get yours? and did you have any dead pixels? I guess that's the only thing that worries me at the moment haha
Really the only question I have left .. which this forum cannot answer is why in the hell is dream-seller telling me the UHD A399U and the Crossover 404k are the same .. Looks like I wont be ordering from him! Thank you everyone for your help :)
Maybe they were talking about something more specific........... I have dealt with dream_seller and have had no problems whatsoever , on the contrary, i was quite satisfied. I can check with them later (Korea time) and see what they say. The housing (cabinet) are quite similar, but then, the Philips and the I cannot remember also have similar housings.......... The display result is definitely not the same, that is obvious. I am not sure it is the same type panel. I am going to locate the amh webb site.
oh, and no dead pixels or whatever on 3 monitors yet ! All tests done with Powercolor 7990 AMD Radeon HD 7990 6GB 6GBD5 DDR5 AX7990 6GBD5-2DHJ yeah !!! :-)
O so you did buy from dream-seller? Like my original post states, I asked him because I saw in the description about if it was possible to get a pixel perfect A399U .. he said no.. Then he never did answer me if it was possible to get a de-glassed version of the A399U AKA "Matte Version" He never answered me.. I have heard that the company is making them de-glassed now.. that's why I asked. Would save me the headache and voiding my warranty lol
If you could find out all those things for me .. I would be forever grateful :)
Yes I will try to comm my contact (so to speak) and ask. You could deglass yourself. Warranty wise, I do believe (IMO) that with these type of small quantities production small companies like AMH have a very specialized and high quality product; as such, most problems will show up during the initial power-on or within a 30 day period of daily use. After that,if within a protected power environment (such as on smart UPS),the chances of failure are relatively low. If you are in a fluctuating power line environment, then the power unit will eventually be affected to the extent that it will affect the life of the said product.(or the performance) Precision high-end equipment requires a steady line supply. MOSTLY when I indicated upon initial power-on, I implied = arrived safely and undamaged at premises.
HI there maxcat! Just curious: what are the differences between the AMH and crossover(colours, black levels.. Responsiveness?) Do you have an overall preference between the 2? Thanks heaps
YUP AMH A399U, with PMW it seems, does not bother me as of yet. Colours are not as eye-pulling as the 404K , and I prefer that, responsiveness , is IMO better, black levels are comparable. The evenness of the blacks are better with a neutral dark black, on the A399u THAN THE 404k. The REMOTE on the 404K is defenitely a plus, the control buttons on the A399U position = SUCK.
404k = no pmw, i do not see difference except A399U seem faster
O so Dream-seller does sell a de-glassed version? or where you referring to the earlier post showing the ebay matte finish version? If it dream-seller your referring.. do you have a link to his de-glassed A399U ebay listing?
New to this forum but got a ton of useful info as I bought the A399U so I figured I should give back. Got mine deglassed from dream-seller. No pixel issues though there is a minute area that looks like a scuffed film on the underside so there's no way to fix it. It's somewhat annoying but I basically ignore it as the return process isn't worth it (if it was a local retailer I would have definitely brought it right back). I think this monitor is a fantastic buy and a great upgrade from my previous three portrait monitor set-up for productivity. The biggest negative is that I wish this display was curved as at desk distances the sides are about 20% further from the middle and it makes a difference, I find myself craning my neck side to side throughout the day. The display calibration arrived wildly off but with fiddling it is quite good now although I haven't used any professional equipment to measure. I did use a couple different DisplayPort cables and none had any problem delivering a registered 4k/60 signal, so that's good.
As for the 404K, I read that a month ago there was a big sale at $500. If that ever came back you should get it due to the 10-bit panel (vs 8-bit on the A399U) and the absence of PWM (which doesn't bother me at all). OTOH, I understand the start up time on the 404K is slow and takes up to 10 seconds whereas the A399U behaves exactly like a proper monitor and turns on/off immediately. At current prices I think both are fairly priced with the 404K worth about 15% more than the A399U.
Lastly, for productivity, I highly recommend Eizio ScreenSlicer to carve up this huge monitor into more usable chunks. It's free and generally works quite well. Open to other suggestions too if anyone has any.
TY so much Maxcat, your information about all this has been invaluable :) Only other question I have is What do you recommend hooking the A399U up with? Dvi, hdmi, display port? Also I have heard that the monitor scales well? down to 1080p or 1440p? Thanks again
it scales perfectly; I play games in 1080p rather than 4k, to show the up scaling is extremely good. I use both HDMI, V 1.4 so i have 1 4k 30Hz and 1 display port for 4k at 60Hz. PS no use pushing the monitors they are made for 60Hz. SCALING FROM 1080P IS PERFECT. (imo) AND i AM FUSSY (EX PHOTOGRAPHER).
