Hi all,
After purchasing a HP C7000 blade server outfitted with top spec gen 6 blades I have come across an issue when a fresh install of Ubuntu is installed. The system is very slow and unresponsive - taking 20 seconds to respond form a click or typed text. thinking that it was graphics related a fresh install of windows 8.1 showed that the on board graphics was enough for a simple desktop environment. Im puzzled as to why Ubuntu is soo slow?
ubuntu-drivers devices
see if you're missing a necessary driver. Probably the InterConnect module or something.
Had a look but the only thing that is showing once the command has been run is relating to the microcode of the processor. Now Im having a hunt for some other drivers for a older supported version. thanks! any idea where I might find a copy of Ubuntu 10.10?

The only thing I could find right now (restricted time), seems to be all beta though.
great! thanks again
Still nothing, there are no drivers form HP apart from the intel chipset ones, any other ideas?
is it stock ubuntu? running Unity?
Because that is the single most resource hog of all the *nix distros.
yes just a stock ubuntu install. how do you disable/remove unity (still new to linux)
just install a new DE and then logout and on the WM select the new DE.
Then if you want to load it by default from login you will need to edit a few files.
heres a list of how resource heavy different distros are.

thanks for the info but its not ram that is the issue, the system has 10k SAS drives, 48Gb per blade and 16 threads so im thinking that it is something else causing the slow down. could you suggest any WM's or DE's that are good for a beginer?
since its a server I'm not sure why you even need a GUI, but if you need the most lightweight one, then in the reddit link it says that XFCE is the lightest DE.
Ill give debian a go but before i do, do you know if there is a 'fast' graphics option in ubuntu, kinda like in windows?
do you mean like faster animations?
anything to take some of the load off of the little graphics chip
sorry no, can't help you there.
If you need any CLI help though you'll find a plethora of knowledge from people here.
what is the GPU, if you don't mind?
As it is a blade server it only has a tiny 32mb integrated chip that seems to run windows fine just struggles on ubuntu
Quick Specs:
Installed Gnome on the blades and it runs like a champ! thanks for the recommendation for getting away form the graphics heavy ubuntu.
