Hi I'm new to the teksnydicate forums. I tried to follow the steps in Wendell's guide to install Ubuntu gnome. As a noob to Linux I'm having massive difficulty installing steam and various other essentials.
Installing Steam always gives an error saying I'm missing "libGL.so.1"
Ubuntu Gnome can randomly change the desktop resolution to 1024x768 and make it impossible to change (re-install required)
When trying to add repositories for the Nvidia drivers repositories shown it doesn't work and give me a bunch of errors I would also like just overall appreciate help with how to install the latest Nvidia drivers for Linux and some common things people do in the setup process.
PlayOnLinux installation would often screw up and be incomplete
Many thanks in advance! I've avoided Linux in the past because of all it's difficulties but now I figured it was a lot easier (unfortunately it's still not easy enough). I was previously running Windows 10 and decided I want to try out Linux as my main OS (still having windows there just for necessities). I have used Linux in virtual machines before but never installed steam or other programs.
EDIT: Play on Linux installed successfully although steam doesn't
I'm not a Ubuntu user, but I'll try to answer your questions.
This is because steam has some 32-bit dependencies. To solve this issue, you need to "multi arch" your installation. To do that, go into your terminal and type
Then you can install the missing packages using aptitude (possible Ubuntu does this automatically when you try to install steam). You can get more information here, although it may be outdated: https://wiki.debian.org/Steam 2. What GPU do you use? I haven't encountered this issue before. Does it happen completely randomly, or when you exit a full screen application, or..? 3. I would recommend using Ubuntu's hardware manager, or Aptitude (synaptic is the graphical frontend in Ubuntu) for installing graphics drivers, since it requires a lot less work if you upgrade. If you have a GTX970/980 (or newer) GPU, you need to fetch the driver (linux-headers-amd64 and nvidia-kernel-dkms) from the experimental repositories on debian. Unsure what version Ubuntu is currently using and what version you are on. 4. I don't use PoL, so can't help you there. Glad to see you got it working!
Hi, I got the graphics drivers working just fine (using 352.30). I'll try adding the i386 architecture later (right now on windows through dual booting). IDK what the problem was for the graphics driver though I eventually fixed it. I'm using a GTX 770.
When you installed, did you select "install proprietary drivers" and the install the MP3 drivers etc? if not, it's easier to reinstall with them enabled as it'll automatically grab the video drivers etc.. saves alot of headache for new users.
