I can't seem to find a DAW that doesn't drive me crazy and would really appreciate some recommendation for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.
I need it for making vocal tracks on top of things (music, voice acting, video commentary), so it has to deal with a small number of tracks well, allow for a range of effects and allow for pre-recorded video to be shown as recording like REAPER (so that the audio track can be synced). I might even get into more advanced recording or music creation someday soon, so it doesn't have to be completely dumbed down.
(REAPER worked through wine for Mint but not Ubuntu.)
(It would be a bonus if it isn't an eyesore or has some decent skins)
Use ardour it is used by professional studios

+1 for Ardour.
I use it to record my band, both jamming and mastering songs.
Just remember that the jackaudio server and native jack software are always the better option rather than using any crossover with wine for asio or any other wine related packages.
Also try out http://ubuntustudio.org/ to give you an idea of some basics with linux audio production.
Then have a look at http://kxstudio.sourceforge.net/ and take your audio to the next level.
There are several other pro-audio distros out there, but half the fun is finding them yourself ;)
Thanks, I'm going with Ardour. I'm having troubles with JACK but i'll try and work it out. Can't do anything without JACK >:(
Good suggestion. I tried Ardour and it seems to work well. Do you know of any good VST instruments (realistic pianos, e-pianos, and horns if possible) that work on linux?
Bitwig Studio also seems promising, though it's not a free program.
There are plenty of plugins for liinux - here's a starting point. http://linux-sound.org/
I purchased Bitwig on release, and have been loving it.
When support for LV2 finally comes to Bitwig things will get better, especially with free tools like http://calf-studio-gear.org/

Reaper runs in GNU/Linux under wine. Just try it. There are a few decent native DAW's for GNU/Linux too, but the main problem is (external) hardware.
