Hi there
I am trying to install Ubuntu 14.04 (with KDE Plasma 5.x) on my secondary Intel SSD where on my primary Samsung 840 Pro SSD Windows 8.1 Pro is installed without UEFI.
I remember Logan @Tek Syndicate talk in one of the vidcasts on Youtube that he installs Linux and Windows next to each other on seperate drives.
On the Ubuntu fora I found one specific topic. Can anyone here guide me in best practices direction ?
THe way I did it is to disconnect windows SSD then install Ubuntu on your SSD of choice
After ubuntu is install reconnect windows SSD go into your bios and boot to your ubuntu SSD
From there in a terminal do: sudo update-grub
It should see windows install and update ,reboot from ubuntu and choose your OS from grub.
Welcome to linux

Thanks epsilont
But is there way to do it without grub ? I just want to be sure I am not overwriting my Windows SSD.
I was not so succesful in doing a dual boot of in UEFI with Windows 8 and then Zorin OS Pro.
I don't think is necessary to let grub know that windows is installed. You can simply install Ubuntu and GRUB in the second SSD. Then you decide which OS to start by switching the boot order from the BIOS. Or you can edit the boot using EasyBCD.
Remember each partitioned disk has it's own MBR.

An update-grub won't touch your windows SSD at all it will update grub thats it and I find it quite
convenient to choose the OS from grub instead of going in bios .
I am set up like that with one SSD Windows and one SSD Xubuntu
I choose which OS from Grub works perfect for me.

Yeah you can do that. It's just personal preference imo.
