Ubuntu 18.04 LTS flash issues and gaming performens (help!)

Hi everyone

I’m new to this forum so sorry in advance if i do something wrong:joy::joy:

i’m fairly new to the linux system and i have issues with flash player on HBO and i have tied install flash and tried 3 different web browser and it still won’t work…

And for the second issue i have is with gaming.
i play csgo for the most part and it doesn’t goes as smoothly as i want.
I have some tearing and lagg on graphics.

My hardware is:
Intel Core i7-5820K Processor
Crucial DDR4 2133MHz 8GB
MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming 4GB

any suggestions on what i can do to fix it?

Dumb question, but are you sure you need Flash? It’s been a very, very long time since I’ve had to install Flash for anything on Linux. Since the advent of HTML5, video is natively supported, and even sites that use DRM can work without Flash.

To use it, you’ll need the “Wildvine” plugin (for Chromium), or you’ll need to enable Wildvine in Firefox under Preferences. The option is “Play DRM content”.

By default, Ubuntu ships with the community-developed ‘nouveau’ video driver for GeForce cards. Open up the Software Center, and check the Driver’s tab. Make sure you’ve enabled the proprietary nvidia driver. Once that installs, you’ll need to reboot to used them.

The Nouveau driver works for basic desktop tasks, but otherwise has bad performance and isn’t suitable for gaming.

You’ll also want the nvidia-settings package, which is a GUI for controlling Nvidia settings. Make sure “Force Composition Pipeline” and “Force Full Composition Pipeline” are both enabled in there. (Note: This can cause a performance drop in some cases. Disable if if you hit one.)

Which browsers did you try? My first debugging step is to download chrome. Not chromium, but the binary, unfree, google version. If it works OOTB with Chrome, it’s a library problem.

Which GPU drivers are you using on your 970? Did you install the proprietary drivers?

You probably want the 3rd party GPU drivers repo:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers

Then you can update your repository caches and install:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install nvidia-390

Then, to make sure nothing happens to them without your intervention:

sudo apt-mark hold nvidia-390

i tried play DRM content in firefox and it didn’t work and for chromium i couldn’t find the plugin…

for the driver i have already done what u have said but i couldn’t fine the “Force Composition Pipeline” and “Force Full Composition Pipeline” in the Nvidia settings…

i tried with firefox, chrome and chromium and didn’t work on either of them.

and for the gpu driver i have already done that are there anything else i could try?

You’ve installed it, but you may not have it running, let’s verify that it is. Can you give me the output of lspci -k? That will show all the devices on your system and what modules they’re using. The bit I’m interested in might look something like this:

Sometimes, even though you’ve got the nvidia driver installed, the open source (nouveau) driver is still running by default.

There are a few options in the nvidia settings we can try once we’ve verified the drivers are actually running.


Uhh, I’m really not the best when it comes to fixing browser issues. I usually just throw my hands up and make a help thread. :stuck_out_tongue:

I remember something about needing to enable DRM features on Firefox for Netflix to work, it’s possible HBO has a similar problem, or they may block linux based on User Agent.

It might be worth trying to spoof your user agent to whatever browser you’re using, but make it think you’re running on OSX or Windows. If you have similar results, you know it’s the library and not HBO discriminating against you for your love of penguins.

I don’t have an HBO subscription, otherwise I’d try to duplicate your issue. If there are “freebies” I can use to test, I’d be happy to.

For the browser issue… I would recommend downloading widevine (which is google’s HTML5 DRM). Although this should be included with the Chrome install from their site.

Also, I had to install chromium ffmpeg codecs to get it working.

sudo apt update && sudo apt install chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra

I would google both of these to get specific instructions for ubuntu.

i did the update and the install and i didn’t work.

here is what i get on each browser

Firefox: Gah. Your tab just crashed

chrome: black screen but i see the title of the series im trying to play.

chromium: Adobe flash player is out of date.

is there anything else i can try?

On Chromium, you have to fake the user agent to get Netflix or any Widevine stuff to load.

You’re gonna have to use the purpose built Chromium with the patches to allow Widevine to run:

Install this, then download the latest Chrome dev version package. Don’t install it, extract the widevine .so files from the chrome dev package and place them in ~/.config/chromium

Then change your user agent in Chromium using the “User Agent Switcher” extension to this:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/(current chromium version, from "About Chromium") Safari/537.36

Netflix should work now.
