Turns out my GPU needs two 8-pin power connections

I sent OCZ this exact email but since it's a holiday I don't really expect an answer back anytime soon...

I just had a simple question. I recently purchased a Sapphire HD 7950 Vapor-X Graphics card. I was under the impression that the card used a 6 and 8 pin power connection, which would work fine with my power supply (OCZ 700w PSU part# OCZ700MXSP) since it has a 6 pin cable and a 6+2 pin cable. However upon delivery I found that it required (two) 8-pin power connections. I was wondering if it was possible to purchase another 6+2 pin cable and use it in the place of the 6 pin cable, or does the power supply not work that way? If I'm not able to do so what are my options as far as getting the card to work with my power supply, or would it be mandatory to purchase a different power supply?

Thanks,
Travis

It should have come with an adapter for 8 pin from Molex or dual 6 pins, for situations like this.

Dual sata to 8 pin

It actually did come with the Molex adapters and I realize they will work, however to me those generic adapters stick out like a sore thumb inside my case lol. I was just trying to determine if I could just purchase and use another 6+2 cable to run directly from the power supply to the GPU. I'm just trying to take pride in my setup since I am a broke ass college student who can only afford a nice computer and nothing else haha.

I don't know how I feel about that, It'll be an option though

Well, pin-outs on the PSUs are not standard, so any old 6+2 pin may not work, and could even fry your card.

I see, I took a look at the exact printed diagram of the pins on the PSU. The 6+2 and the 6 pin cable are using the same setup as far as which pins get voltage and which are grounds. I know you can't give a definative answer but doesn't the lower port (currently using a 6+2 cable) seem the same as the top? Here is a picture of it. I know I may have over-complicated this simple problem

PSU

I would suggest just returning the OCZ PSU and getting a new one.

I've had this power supply for a while, it's currently powering the computer I'm using right now. I'm just upgrading my graphics card

I'd still say get a new PSU. Either that or you could trade your card in for a less epic one.

Adapters are pretty much shit, and you really should have a PSU with more than one 8-pin PCI-E connector.

The thing is I think this PSU is capable of running two 8 pin connectors without adapters if I just had the cable, but I'm not sure. I see what you are saying though.

I just went ahead and installed it with the molex adapters. Running great just seen it hit 80+ fps on BF3 with ultra settings, and it's running pretty darn cool I couldn't be any happier with it :)

Hell, my corsair CX750M has 4 6+2 pin connections on it

If the cables didn't come with the PSU then you can't run them. It's that simple.

I'm proboblly gonna buy that PSU
