TRX40 Designare with 3960x Threadripper Help with Firewire!

I just built a new computer using the MB and Processor in the title. I was using an Intel set up before but wanted a Threadripper with 24 cores.

My Audio Interface is an Steinberg MR816x and it’s firewire 400. I have a Generic 1x PCIe Firewire card and an empty 1x slot.

Bottom line I’ve tried every available slot, one of the x8 and one of the x16, removed the Titan Ridge just in case and I can not get the interface to work.

I can load the driver, see everything in Device Manager and the interface seems to connect but when I try to play a file it stalls. For instance I pull up Media Player and start an audio file and the needle never moves. Just sits there. No sound. No sound on YouTube. No sound in a test.

So, before I go to crazy trying to make this work does anyone know if the old generic firewire 400 PCIe cards just don’t work with this chipset or motherboard? I’ve read multiple forums and that’s the closest I can get. AMD doesn’t play nice with firewire. Help!

I’m building a TR system shortly but I don’t have a firewire card to test with it, so I cannot comment on a fix for you.

However, somewhere I have an old USB 2.0 (I think it was 2.0) hub that had a few firewire ports on it, and just used a USB cable to connect to the computer. I’m not sure if that would work for you or not, but if you’re in the USA I could send it to you. Maybe it would solve your problem? I’ll have to dig it up in this mess, so let me know.

Had to post a success! Here’s the deal.

The MR816x by Steinberg is not dead! I had to pass through 3 adapters but amazingly the Tunderbolt “like” (Wendel ) port works like a charm! At first I thought I could go from Firewire 400 to 800 (adapter 1) to Thunderbolt 2 (adapter 2) and then in to the Titan Ridge card. Nope. Would not recognize. I did more reading and the success seemed to occur after one more adapter. The thought of 3 adapters plugged in to an firewire audio interface from 2008 (yep 12 years ago) seemed, well impossible. But it was only one more adapter so what the heck.

I ordered up the only one that I could find. $50! Ouch. I had already spent $40 between the other 2 adapters so I wasn’t thrilled but it was that or a purchase of at least $500 to get something close to the MR816x. I ordered it.

It came this afternoon. Easter Sunday Amazon is delivering packages. Got the notice and stepped outside and there it was. My heart dropped because all I could think was, this is not going to work, I’ll have to return them all and buy a new interface.

I walked upstairs like it was the Green Mile and plugged in the 3rd adapter thinking, no way. Turned on the computer waited until I was fully booted up and turned on the MR816x. Like a resurrection (yeah Easter talk) life was breathed in to my system as I heard the pop indicating that “something” had just connected. I still didn’t see the MR816 as a choice for speakers so I remembered, that’s right! I have to open the Thunderbolt Control Center, which by the way other posts (not related to audio interfaces) had said “not” to install, and “Activate” the device. Crossed fingers and opened it. The “adapter” was showing but not the MR816x. I did the only thing I would do which was activate it. Instantly, again like a resurrection, the system opened the window to load the Yamaha device driver. I clicked yes and boom! It lives!!!

I turned on my speakers, pull up a YouTube video and there was glorious sound!!! Only one thing left to do. I opened Cubase 10.5 and without even having to reset the Audio Hardware in Cubase it recognized and “set up” the entire system. First project I loaded worked flawlessly. Better than when I was running firewire. My input latency is just over 3ms and my output latency is at just over 5ms. It’s screaming!!

I loaded a project that I had to run at least 256 samples for buffering and then just live with the occasional drop out. (running all of the VST synths live, a full orchestra of high end samples.) Ran the whole project without a pop or a click.

So there it is. I’m now a believer in this motherboard and the inclusion of the Titan Ridge AIC. This thing is awesome!!!

If you are one of the many who have a Steinberg MR816x and a new system there is no need to switch to a USB or even Thunderbolt audio interface. Spend about $100 on adapters and you are off to the races! Here’s the list of adapters I used. Happy Resurrection day!

Congrats! Nice to hear something worked out!
