Triple monitor setup with ThinkCentre M720s

The ThinkCentre I have at work has Core i7-8700 & has a 2XDP & VGA.

According to Intel, I can have a triple monitor setup with a DPx2+HDMI/VGA. My 3 monitors don’t have a VGA & I’m wondering if a VGA-HDMI active cable will still allow me to run triple monitor.

I’ve setup similar configurations for my clients before and that’s exactly how we did it. Worst case, return it and try a different one!

The iGPU should be DP1.2.

Have you looked into getting an MST hub?

Or better still, check if the current monitors have MST support built-in. As you might be able to daisychain the DP monitors.

actually, the 2 monitors plugged to the DP are connected with a DP-DVI cable.

Thanks! You raised the chance above 50%. Just the push I needed.

Then an MST hub should still do the trick…

DP1 -> MST hub -> DP-DVI x2
DP2 -> DP-HDMI

In the past, I’ve found that DP to HDMI tends to be much more reliable, as TMDS is so widely supported that it is more or less the defacto standard. Where as flipping between analogue and digital signals can introduce artifacting into the signal.

I decided to go cheap, take a chance on that VGA-HDMI active adapter for $15 CAD. It works. Only weird issue is that the output is shifted to the right, which bothers me slightly, but not enough to stop me from using it.

I might’ve gone with that MST Hub if COVID didn’t force my workplace to reduce my hours.
