Triple GTX 980 vs Titan X

Hey guys,

Very soon I plan on building a 4k video editing/coding/gaming machine and I was wondering if I should wait for the Titan X or go ahead and buy the GTX 980's. (also I will be overclocking my GPU/s)

Thanks a ton!

I would always go with the better one card option over any 2 card configuration, let alone a 3 card config. However I don't believe 4k gaming is really buttery smooth and waiting for the next generation AMD or Nvidia cards might really pay off in this upgrade to 4k. Lets see some other replies and see if they agree.

So your recommendation would be to go with the titan, or even to downscale the resolution for the monitor?

No I believe the TitanX can handle 4k gaming, but the question is for how long. With games having more and more detail its possible the TitanX will lose its capability to perform up to your expectations for a long period of time. You can see from the PC perspective video below you are getting around 50-60 FPS on Battle Field 4 at 4k resolution. This game is beautiful but also was released back in October 29, 2013. Right after that they show the Titan X run Crysis but not even at 4k. He also later goes on to say the R9 295x2 will give you around 20% more performance over the TitanX for around $300 less. But just like purchasing the 980s it is a multi GPU card and comes with possible hardware and software problems when game and software developers do not support a multi GPU configuration. I don't want to give you a yes or no answer as both choices are great buys. Again hopefully other people will post so you can get a feel of which way to lean.

I hope so too, thanks a ton for your response!

As long as it isn't crysis, a titanx will give decent fps at high settings. Crysis still runs sub 30fps on very high...

I personally plan to hold off on 4k for another gpu generation or two.

4k was just a thought. I am now leaning more towards that LG 34" curved 3440x1440 display. Do you think one GTX 980 would be capable at driving that display for gaming? (Mostly Titanfall, and Battlefield 4, along with some other indie games)

a 980 should be fine for that as long as your not going into super sampling i would recomend the EVGA Superclocked or classified with the ACX 2.0 cooler but if you have a different preference go ahead

That would have been my first choice, would like 2x MSAA be fine? if not that resolution with no sampling is fine by me.

Filters are pointless @ 4k

Thank you everyone for all of your help. I have decided to go with the Titan X due to the larger amounts of VRAM as well as the extra cuda cores (video editing). However, I have decided to go with the lg curved display for the IPS functionality as well as the lower res for better gaming FPS.
Again thank you for all of your help!
