After having a recent break in I've become a bit more paranoid with my systems being stolen. Unfortunately my knowledge on tracking software, or actual chips is pretty little. Anyone have some suggestions? This would be concerning mostly my laptop (mbp running xubuntu) and my main tower.
I remember hearing a story a while ago of a guy who got robbed and setup his PC to take video with a webcam when it detects motion, and managed to catch some thieves with it.
Maybe you could do something alike, that uploads the video taken to a cloud service (google drive per se) in the case of the actual devices being stolen. That way you could check every so often at work or whatever if it's spotted anything.
Wouldn't make a bad raspberry pi project.
I've been doing a little research, seems like Prey is pretty impressive software. Also it having multi os support is always a nice touch.
Looks interesting, but I doubt that if someone stole a tower they're going to boot it up AND connect it to the internet without formatting the HDD and doing a fresh OS install (especially if you're using linux or whatever, and have a pass on it).
Then again, it's a thief that would've stole your PC/Laptop. And if I've learnt anything from Wallace and Gromit, the wrong trousers, theives are idiots.
I mean look at this guy:
Nice head udders. You call that a disguise?
Lol trust me, the ones who robbed my house were not very bright. Left behind a lot of items that were out in the open.
