Torrenting Remotely to NAS

Let me first apologize because I'm sure this has been asked before and covered in the NAS video of Wendell's.

Let me just summarize my situation:

I've got a NAS running FreeNAS is the back of the house

An HTPC for my main viewing television

A laptop always handy by my recliner

Exactly what do I need to do I so I can tell my NAS to torrent something via my laptop, then allow me to watch it on my HTPC?

I don't expect a thorough explanation, just names of utilities/programs, and resources I can look into myself.

I know FreeNAS can do SO MUCH MORE than I am doing with it and it is a shame.

Again, sorry for being redundant.

Just take a look at the plugins tab in FreeNAS. I'm assuming you already set the HTPC up to be able to access files on the NAS.

use a torrent client with a webui, then you can access if from your laptop. If you can put deluge on there then you can run the daemon on your NAS and the front end GUI on your laptop. Google some guides and it should be pretty easy to set up.

I'm sorry, I wasn't exactly sure what you wanted me to install what where. I get Deluge running on the laptop but it's using it's wireless to do so. How can I use the wired connection of my NAS to get things done faster?

any torrent client with a webui can be controlled remotely using a browser. But if you can install deluge in the nas, you can also use your deluge client installed on your laptop to control it remotely. it's just an suggestion, but like I said, just use any torrent client with a webui and you can control it remotely.

Alright, so I got the transmission client and webui working however nothing I add to it downloads. It just hangs indefinitely at 0%

I'm going to be brief, hopefully you can follow along:

  • Install transmission plugin [check]
  • Have a dataset that is shared to the HTPC
  • Sub-dataset or folder or however you want to do it for downloads
  • Enable all permissions on the downloads dataset
  • Add the downloads dataset as storage to the transmission plugin's jail
  • Configure the transmission plugin to use the storage you added instead of the default locations
  • Success?

The key step is setting the permissions and mounting the shared storage, otherwise transmission is like OMG I CAN'T DO THIS TT___TT

You could also make separate datasets for the torrent watch folder and I think you could just leave the config folder as the default and it should still work. I was gung-ho and changed everything and now I don't remember the default to test it out and don't feel like reinstalling it, so I'll leave it as an exercise for you to try yourself :)

All my torrents say their network port is closed.

I even enabled uPTP in my router config.

I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I've let you down...

I could be wrong, but assuming you are running CIFS, cant you torrent it on your laptop, HTPC or whatever and instead of saving it on the local drive,  just download it to the mounted network drive?

If it works on your laptop then it should work on the NAS. Ugh I already deleted the plugin haha. Well, can you describe the layout of your network?

EDIT: By the way, are you using version 2.77 PBI of transmission?

I don't use Transmission on my laptop. Should I try it for troubleshooting purposes?

Also, yeah, I'm using 2.77 amd64. I tried installing 2.82 but it just vaguely told me "Some Error Occurred"

And yes. I can just wirelessly torrent from my laptop to the NAS but it makes me feel like I'm banging violins together to make "music". Also it's much slower.

This should definitely work so we just have to figure out why your network is being weird. I'm not afraid to use the shell.

I'm just talking about if torrenting works on your laptop then your router shouldn't interfere with the NAS.

I'm afraid I have no clue what it is you're showing me. I neglected to mention I am using 8.3.1.

If I mount 9.2.x to a usb and fired it up will I still have all my volumes?

That way we can be on the same page here.

I was showing transmission is working for me and the network settings for the transmission plugin jail for you to compare so that you can be sure yours is set up properly. But if you are using an old version of FreeNAS, definitely upgrade! You can either upgrade through the FreeNAS web interface, or if you want to be safe and just try it out first, you can unmount the ZFS volume from the "ZFS Volume Manager" by selecting your root storage pool and click the "Detach Volume" button. Make sure to verify in the options dialog that you don't clear the disks or delete the shares. Then boot up the new version of FreeNAS and click "Auto Import Volume" to mount the pool.

If you have comcast it may be the problem. I heard on one of the teks that they were blocking torrenting

I have Comcast. They don't block torrenting for me, though from what I understand they might slow it down.

Can I upgrade remotely or do I have to burn the ISO to a drive and do it the old fashioned way? I was looking all over the menus but couldn't seem to find an option for it.

Welp, looks like I can't even upgrade my pile of crap.

I never should have tried to computer. Maybe rock collecting would be more my thing.

(didn't know what the image tool wanted of me)

You used the upgrade file right?
