Im looking at either the Asus R9 290 DCU II or the MSI Twin Frozr GTX 770 4gb for my $1600 build. I realize that the AMD does get much better FPS in gaming, however I love the Nvidia software for their cards, the drivers are simpler to install on GeForce Experience, the card runs cooler and quieter, and not to mention the PhysX, which is awesome. Is it worth the extra FPS of the R9 290 or should go I for the Nvidia card?
R9 290. Very easy choice to make. Games run their own version of PhysX, which runs on both AMD and Nvidia. So many of the talking points are actually moot.
Yeah, on second thoughts, I agree with Anarekist. You should probably go with the 750ti. It doesn't require any power connectors, because it is super efficient.
grab the 290. They seem to be at a decent price atm. plus the 4 gig gtx 770 isn't really worth it unless you plan to SLI and play at 4K or 1440p surround.
290. Just get the the 290. Physx is a gimmick, granted one I like myself, but if you want a better experience all round in gaming the 290 will deliver more consistently and for longer with better and better games. The driver updating is a non issue, it will save you time for sure but whats 5 minutes?
I like the Twin Forzer design, I have the 7870 hawk and it is really nice for cooling and silence, but the Direct CU II just rocks. All roud the 290 is the better choice here.
I will end this with "I like AMD" so my view is slightly skewed, no mistakes made the 770 is a kick ass card but given the same choice it will always be the 290 for me.
my 770 dominates most games. Things like Far Cry 3, my modded skyrim, and Watch Dogs drop my frames down to around 35-45. Other than that, 60+ fps across the board at 1080p.
You can't compare a gtx 770 and r9 290. 770 competes with 280X, which is a step down from r9 290. Not to mention, it comes with 4 gb of ram vs 2 gb of 770. It will matter if you are playing games at higher than 1080P resolutions. PhysX can be run cpu side too, but I don't really care for it. If you must have geforce experience then the choice is clear, but if you want solid fps, and longevity then buy a 290.
Driver updates are generally big news and spread pretty quick so if you are online everyday you will find out. Installation of drivers is pretty straightforward and as easy as it gets, compared to linux.
Geforce experience is far superior to gaming evolved/raptr in my opinion. Gaming evolved/raptr seems to take up more resources and is in general more annoying (various popups and such, sort of like steam.) Plus Geforce experience has shadowplay, and streaming to shield if that's your thing.
