are tri fire 7970s better than 3 way sli 680s? How good is the optimization?
depends on the type of aplication, and how much you awant to spend. if yourlooking at gaming, the 7970's are probably better, as well as price. however, if you are doing video or photo editing in a cuda enabled program, then the 680's. both of theese are a bit overkil for anything anyways.

Id say theyd end up performing better because of the 384bit memory bus width and extra GB of Vram, unless for some reason you use all 3 on low resolutions.
