And that computer is $500 minimum, new.
That is the same for any PC in that you need hardware to run the OS. And linux for this application can run on a toaster so the hardware can be very cheap, even windows can run on minimal hardware and don't forget hackintosh.
It's not, though, because that $500 mac (the mac mini) has about $200 of hardware inside of it. This is what he was getting at. The OS may be free, but the hardware requirements and ridiculous pricing means that you are wasting hundreds of dollars that could be spent elsewhere if you use a different OS.
Oh I know I am even arguing against myself at this point, what I was getting at is there there are ALWAYS other options and rarely do you (not you personally) have the cheapest/best option straight away.
