Hello all, it has been awhile and I am looking for some advice. I currently have a Asrock Phantom Gaming 7800xt and while it has been a great card for around two years I am looking to upgrade to a 9070 XT since prices are starting to normalize. My questions for the community are should I even upgrade? I am torn between the Asrock 9070 XT Taichi or the Sapphire 9070 XT Nitro+, the Nitro+ is $20 more but I love how the power cable is hidden on that GPU. I still game on a 2k 165hz monitor but I also have a LG OLED C4 that I sometimes connect my PC to. Some more information I left out, im 97% sure my Fractal 2 case will fit either GPU, the Phantom Gaming model is pretty large. I have a 7900x cpu on an ASUS mb with 64gb of ram, it was a MicroCenter combo deal. So what do y’all think, upgrade or not and if so which model? Ohhh and lastly if I do upgrade should I just sell my 7800 xt on FB Marketplace or Craigslist? Is there any better options like trade in? I offered it to a friend for free but he’s a console gamer and doesn’t want to be bothered with building a PC around a GPU.
I mean, I wouldn’t bother with that upgrade, but I’m a salvage-bin shopper that just finally upgraded from an rx580 to a 6700xt, so… I doubt anybody can give you a straight answer, this is all down to personal preference only.
And i would probably go for the Sapphire card. Because Sapphire has a longer history of making fantastic cards. Not that the asrock is a bad option. They are pretty new to the gpu game. But they do have pretty nice build quality. I think that sapphire card looks amazing.
The price of vram is going up and so the price of cards are going to go up. And next gen seems like it’s going to be a year away maybe more. So buying soon seems like a good idea.
GPU prices are supposed to jump quite largely next year, so either buy now or buy in 2-3 years.
Does the 7800XT do what you need it to and you really just have an itch to buy something new? If so then dont upgrade. If it cant play the games you want then it is time to upgrade. Or if you can get by decent enough on your current card even though it doesnt do what you really are hoping for, then see if you can hold out till 2027 and upgrade to the next gen at that time. It will be a much larger upgrade for you.
I know for me personally I have an RTX 3090 I got at almost MRSP during covid, it has been a great card but it cant play any UE5 games well. Borderlands 4 for on medium and low settings with DLSS performance mode I barely get 50-60fps average with drops every few seconds into the 20-30s. So its time to upgrade since I am unable to play any new games well. But I am still waiting as this gen just isnt enough of an upgrade yet. Im holding off for next generation. and just choosing not to play any new games until then, I can work on my backlog instead.
I could probably hold out until next gen and maybe even get a 7800x3d chip then and turn my 7900x into a home server. I would like to use FSR 4/Redstone and get good RT quality but by no means is it a necessity. Thank you for your input, I will probably hold off and work on my backlog. I recently got a LCD Steamdeck and I have been playing that way more than my Gaming PC.
I couldn’t do it, $600+ for a new GPU just didn’t sit right with me. Life goes on, maybe I can get in on the next AMD card in a year.
This generation of AMD GPU’s kind of sucks anyway. The 9070XT is slower than the older 7900XTX. And only like 5% faster than the 7900XT. Raytracing is a little better with the 9000 series. But raytracing kinda sucks in most if not all games.
