Sorry if the category is bad but I didn't know where to put this.
In about 6 Months I'm moving from the USA to South Korea for work. I know realistically I can't take the whole world with me but some things I'd really like to take because they are expensive and I don't want to buy new.
First off is my gaming rig and my wife's gaming rig. Both are mid towers and I've heard you can take the GPU out and then just mail the rest but it takes about a month to ship things from the USA to Seoul usually and I kind of need my machine to work from. Is it complicated to just check it as luggage or to fit it as a carry on. Keeping in mind I have a Monitor, Mouse and Keyboard at the bare minimum that I would also need to take with. Or is it really easier to just mail them?
Another question I have is about my router and modem, I have a nice Gigabit Router and a Gigabit switch that allow me to have gigabit Ethernet to everything on my network (except cell phones which have to be wireless). Should I think about bringing these since I'll be in Korea for at least a year? Or should I try to live with that they provide me. The problem is I'm a control freak about my network and I like to have control of it.
Finally my last concern is power. I've been abroad before and fried a laptop power supply even though I used an adapter with it. I'm wondering if I should just buy a Korean PSU for my systems in Korea instead of getting an adapter and use my existing PSU?
Anyone in a similar circumstance or been there before and have some tips to do this smoothly?
For transporting the tower , take off the cpu heatsink , it's heavy and with rip on the motherboard when they throw it around.
Also , take the hard drive out and bring it with you on the plane in an enclosure. That way if the machine gets lost or stolen you still have your information.
So I moved my system over air few years back and did so by throwing away the tower and pushing everything into a giant suitcase padding mobo's monitors etc with my laundry....that's what I did.
Yes I was trying to stay within luggage weight limits which I did not manage but payed some 30 eur worth of extra to get it onboard otherwise it worked well. Any other commercial shipping service etc would have been stupid-expensive in my case so I just brought what I needed it was a little sad as I had to leave the case on the street for someone to find but If i had started preparing earlier for the trip I might have sold it. Also I must add that I had 2 expensive 24" monster monitors (back when 24" ips was the stuff) in that case (they were identical so I taped them to face eachother and put everything else around them.
Remove the CPU cooler Video card and any other expiation cards hard drives to avoid damage to them.
As for power you will want to check if the PSU you currently have supports the voltages used in South Korea. You may have to flick a switch on the back of the PSU for that. If you are concerned about the power i would get a UPS to protect the system.
