Time for a new distro

Hi all.

I've been using ubuntu for a few months and since I have built my new machine it has been giving me issues that I don't feel like dealing with.

I am looking to try a new distro. I don't know what but screw ubuntu and all of it's nonsense. I have been dealing with it's crap for too long now and I am tired of it.

I would like to go home to arch but arch by itself is too much to deal with. Any suggestions?

Looks like I won't get to stream today after all.

Mint is a good home
It holds your dick for you, even shakes it sometimes

Ubuntu based OS's are off the list.

Then use the lmde version debian based not ubuntu

Mint over all is ubuntu based. The interface doesn't matter.

OpenSUSE? Elementary? I'm thinking about testing out Mageia 5 on my laptop soon.

I had some thought of using netrunner based on Arch, however it has a few bugs that the Netrunner devs refuse to fix.

Opensuse is a favorite but it takes a lot of resources. Might look at it though,

I will say that Ubuntu is probably the most "problem less" linux is going to get. I would recommend just going straight Debian if you like aspects of Ubuntu: such the apt repository

How about trying that one, never heard of it till yesterday

Manjaro?

First of all, if you can't be bothered problem solving things in Ubuntu you are going to have a bad time in other distros where support will come nowhere near ubuntus community(excluding arch, they have a great wiki and a decent community). My vote would be for just straight debain I guess. It's going to be familiar in terms of package management, but hopefully will different enough from ubuntu for you lol. Also if you feel like going to arch, it ia honestly not that hard to install. 20 - 30 minutes for a beginner for the base system. Food for thought.

I use arch on other systems. Laptops mostly. I can't be bothered to fix much in ubuntu because another update is going to roll along and break it again anyways. I has happened many times before and it will continue to happen. Of this, I am aware.

I am more at home in arch, or at least in an arch based system, or in OpenSUSE as it is what I started out in the linux world with. One of my few issues I will have is that with base arch I might screw up my drives on the install. Additive to that, this is a constant work machine, versus a laptop where I can sacrifice a day or two to fix broken packages. For a desktop I can't exactly sacrifice that time.

In openSUSE there is a good backing towards it. I haven't completely learned how it works but I am willing to jet right through it.

I did think about Manjaro but the IRC channel for arch doesn't seem to like it very much. I have seen rather stable systems for it and I am willing to look into it. This needs to be done tonight either way.

Another Arch based distro I was thinking about was netrunner but I have had problems with it in the past and I am not the only one. It really is a gimmick OS for it's customization of KDE.

I am leaning towards Manjaro the more I am thinking about it though.

Okay if you are worried about drive selection and partitioning/formatting, here's an easy solution. Download and make a live cd/usb with some version of gparted on it(such as mint etc..). Then load into a live session and open up gparted and proceed to make your partitions and whatever else you need. then shut down your live session and start up your arch usb. when you are in the arch install just go along as usual, but skip the partitioning and formatting part and go straight to mounting your root and boot drives. From there on you should be all good.

Use Antergos it is based on Arch but very nice looking and easy to use.

Okay so I tried antergos and was hoping ti would work.

The installer is broken, it can't add it's own features, and grub never sets up correctly. Looks like another dissappointment. Oh well, gives me something to keep track of, I guess.

Elementary is Ubuntu based.
I love it though. So nice looking.

I have tried Elementary before and swap was never set up correctly :c

Then set it up yourself.

Opensuse for myself is the best overall distro. Great package manager. Has both stable and rolling releases. You can roll your own distro wih Suse studio. And Yast is the best admin panel I have ever used in any OS

It is a thought. I would have to play with it though :P I haven't used it in forever.

Played with Suse Studio in high school :P
