It's time for a new build and the parts are almost decided already. Just a few questions/worries about CPU and Motherboard.
First is about the processor. I have been looking at a few, and most recently the Devil's Canyon series. (i7-4790k and i5-4690) and the "old" Haswells (i7-4790 and i7-4770k). Don't plan to overclock or overclock much depending on the CPU, but have read that the Devil's Canyons get quite hot. Could I run one at decent temperatures with the cooling selected or should I go for one of the other CPU's for a cooler alternative?
The other part is the motherboard. What motherboard would be reccomended as good and reliable in similar price range as the Gigabyte card that I've looked at? Would prefer a card with decent amount of USB 3-ports and Wifi.
Computer will be used for mid-range gaming, photo & music editing and some light rendering.
Here are the parts:
looks pretty awesome!!! you could do some pretty hardcore gaming with this rig if you choose to!
Looks good. The NH-D14 is a very nice cooler.
The unlocked haswell refresh chips are the i7-4790k and i5-4690k. If they have no K at the end, then their multiplier is locked. Your build looks like it's oriented a bit towards overclocking, so get the K parts.
The older haswell chips are the i7-4770k and i5-4670k. Likewise, if they don't have a K at the end, they're multipliers are locked.
I would take the haswell refresh. Having a better TIM underneath the IHS will allow you to cool the chip much, much better.
The Gigabyte board should also do just fine.
thanks, but not feeling much wiser...do the devil's canyon run hot or can this setup keep them cool?
And also...the gigabye card + wifi card vs. Asus z97-deluxe?
All Intel CPUs run hot. The Devils Canyon parts do slightly better actually.
That Noctua is a beast and will have no trouble cooling the part.
Really what I would do is get a Xeon 1230V3. It can be overclocked but it is basically an i7-4770 without the iGPU. Great in gaming and the HT will make it a beast when video editing. It is about the same price as the i5 too. Will run cool.
You could then also get a cheaper motherboard, say B85 or H97, as well as a cheaper cooler and save quite a bit of cash.
You prob don't need an 850 Pro either. An Evo drive would be just fine.
I'd also changed the HDDs to WD ones. They seem to be more reliable in my experience but the Seagate 2TB drives are cheaper.
Changed the 780 to an R9 290. It is cheaper and faster. Plus it is an OpenCL beast. In most apps that can use both CUDA and OpenCL, OpenCL is faster. Plus it has more VRAM. That being said if you absolutely need CUDA get the 780.
You also really don't need Windows 8.1 Pro or all those case fans. ODD is optional but I'm assuming you wanna burn BluRays so.
Here is what I'd do:

You could get a cheaper WiFi card if you want. But AC and Intel stuff is nice.
Thanks for the tips, but only parts that are up for change is mobo and processor. Quite set on the parts in the main post, those are the parts I want. Just uncertain about heat from the new cpu's and the two motherboards.
