Tiered Storage Spaces Question - Windows Server 2019

So previously my setups have all been with FreeNAS or Unraid. I have used Storage Spaces previously but only in simple configurations.

Right now I am building a Windows Server 2019 storage box. I am not going to get into it here but the server has to run Windows in this situation. I want to keep the box simple for the person who will be using it so I want to avoid virtualization and VM’s. This is for a home storage server running on a 10gbe home network.

The storage related hardware involved will be:

  • 2X 500GB WD SSD’s.
  • 6X 12TB Exos drives.
  • 2X 10TB Barracuda drives.

What my understanding is using more columns would potentially lead to better performance. But because the drives do have different capacities I am better off sticking with a single column and using the SSD’s as a tiered cache for the pool.

Anyone have any experience with this? If so would you recommend a different setup?

Thanks.
