Threadripper virtualisation + storage homeserver - now a buid blog

Right, what I meant was for Pro cpu’s (ryzen or threadripper) if PSB is enabled, is the boot post code cycle different when they won’t boot due to the vendor lock.

Yeah, according to Reddit it would get stuck like three post codes in (C7 or sth similar). Doing a BIOS upgrade now. I’ll try CMOS reset too, but I assumed it wouldn’t even store or didn’t initialize anything if it fails like 1,5s after Power-On.

Update done and successfull according to BMC, but it seems BMC won’t update the inventory without a boot beyond the 00 error  so it is still listing BIOS Firmware Version 8.01 even if I cold start the system. Current version is 10.02

Edit: Cleaned the underside of the CPU (found a tiny cat hair) and reseated again, tried all slots with the available RAM sticks. I will replace the CPU and try another RAM kit. If this doesn’t work out I‘ll give up on this platform.

Edit 2: Did a CMOS reset, still the same error. Ordered another TR Pro WX 3945.

It‘s alive!!! I almost can‘t believe it. Got my second CPU yesterday, booted immediately (okay it had to train the RAM first). Defective board and CPU, how big are the odds…

What RAM kit would you recommend? Currently there is only a 256GB non-ecc DDR4 G-Skill on the market (which ofc isn’t on the supported RAM list). 128GB-256GB would be fine by me.

Glad it worked out. Are you sure the CPU was defective, or was it maybe just vendor locked?

There are unfortunately lots of scummy sellers on used markets, and this has only gotten worse with vendor locked CPU’s. They will often sell you a locked CPU as unlocked, hoping you’ll spend enough time troubleshooting (because you probably won’t have enough other parts to test with, like second motherboard, etc.) that you run out the clock on the return.

The broken CPU is new from cyberport.at, a official big vendor of server and pc parts - the scummiest they do is listening items as immediately available on their site although they have to order it, but this unfortunately a common practice in the EU.

DIY: Because I couldn’t find a solution anywhere. If you have a Freezer 4U cooler and the second fan is blocked, you can use a slim fan and mount it with a third party fan clamp on the top. It is held in place by the mainboard shroud.

same board, same cooler, but I used zipties
BTW, the big fans are Arctic S12038-4K at 33% pwm, (relatively) quiet and keep my HDDs at around 30c. Like 40€ for a 3-pack, way cheaper than the Noctuas or Phanteks that people like to use (when modding the Supermicro 846)

It took a while for the case to arrive, but now that I have have assembled everything, my initial regrets are vanishing. All my goals (bifurcated nvme drives, hba, 1600 W PSU with molex cables from another PSU (no worries the manufacturer supports this), cheap TR CPU, 256GB ECC RAM) turned out pretty plug and play after the initial hurdles.

I am glad I took the time to research the hardware and options, testing the components pre-assembly instead of trying to get everything working in a build marathon. The cable management is a bit rough, but there is not much space to make things pretty in a 4u case using stock cables.

I also want to thank every one helping me out.

Oooh, yes I like.

Very cool. I also had issues with my TR build, replaced mobo and ram and now its running. Feels good once its working and you can start getting stuff installed.
