Threadripper 5000 Workstation - RAM occupation

Hey everyone,

I am right now building a new workstation meant for Deep Learning using a Threadripper 5975WX.
For tax reasons the parts that I picked had to be shipped this year. For that reason I chose 4 sticks of 64gb memory instead of 8 sticks of 32gb, because they were the only ones that were directly available at the shop I ordered them.

I hope that performance won’t take too much of a hit, but I am still unsure in which positions of the Mainboard I have to put the sticks in. I’ve read the manual but I could not find any comment on that if you use less than 8 sticks.

Can anyone help me there? The mainboard I ordered is the ASUS Pro WS WRX80E-SAGE SE, also mainly because it was the only one directly available.

Also, if anyone sees a problem with the build I’d be very thankful for any comments on that!

Greetings!

Build:

  • AMD TR 5975WX (CPU)
  • ASUS Pro WS WRX80E-SAGE SE (MB)
  • 4 * Kingston reg ecc ddr4 3200mhz (RAM)
  • IceGiant ProSiphon Elite (CPU cooler)
  • BeQuiet! Dark Power Pro 1500W (PSU)
  • Samsung 990 Pro (SSD)
  • RTX 4090 (GPU)
  • Fractal Torrent (Case)

Got the same! Great case with great airflow…the name is very fitting. Plenty of space. I like the stock fans but I worry about how you fit that IceGiant cooler into it because the top exhaust is where the PSU sits and CPU exhaust leads right into the PSU fan. There is plenty of intake cold air for the Icegiant from both bottom fans as well as from the 180mm front fans. The torrent converges basically around that area.

About memory…well 4 channel configuration is supported, but you obviously get less (half) bandwidth. But you can later upgrade memory with another 4 sticks if you feel like it, for double capacity and double the channels. Privilege of 8-channel platform

Ok thanks for that. Then I guess I should think about replacing the memory sticks or buy more of the 64gb sticks. Though I really doubt that I will need 512gb…

Good point! Can someone recommend a good air cooler, which would fit my case better?
Maybe Noctua NH-U14 TR4-SP3 or be quiet! Dark Rock Pro TR4?

IceGiant should be able to fit that case
Airflow shouldn’t be too terrible… if anything, air would be directed up, towards PSU

Otherwise, Noctuas U14 would be next best bet [ pipe contact basically runs across IHS span]
Haven’t seen if be Quiet, had its contact plate been updated, since sub-die changes
[Gen3+, some of the cores would get throttled HAHHD, since contact pipes more centralized]

It does fit (judging from experience with my Torrent), but the Torrent doesn’t have your usual radiator/fan mounts on top but rather dedicates bottom+front for cooling. Right on top of the CPU is the PSU (there isn’t much space between my Noctua D15 and the PSU mesh). There is a mesh so the PSU fan can breathe, but I wouldn’t want to blow 400W Threadripper exhaust into a 1.5kW PSU@70% load if I can avoid it.

Memory…you might be able to sell the 64G sticks at some point and get 2nd hand 32G sticks instead. Or upgrade once DDR4 ECC RDIMMs can be had cheap on ebay

But 4 channels of DDR4-3200 is basically the bandwidth of DDR5-6400, so not THAT bad. We’re talking theoretical peaks here. And they are still super awesome RDIMMs

The IceGiant won’t work in this case, unless you lay it flat like an old desktop. Their support page talks about the TR Pro, and though the cooling base will fit the SP8 socket, the orientation of the cooler would prevent it from functioning.

I don’t have a specific recommendation for a cooler, just a little advice. Get whatever has the best cooling you can fit in your budget. If you eventually enable PBO, performance will scale with cooling - the better the cooler, the faster the CPU will run. The IceGiant is a great option (from what Wendell said in his review video  ), you just need a horizontal case.

Thank you so much, everyone!
If the product page even indicates that the IceGiant will not work properly I absolutely will send it back!
I think I will replace it with the be quiet! dark rock pro tr4, because I read in a test that it was slightly superior on a Threadripper compared to the Noctua and honestly I also much prefer the looks :DD
