What do guys think will be their price, and would they be better or worse than skylake ?
Depends on what zen will be like and what the platform will be like.
8 core zen with ivy-bridge like IPC and decent overclocking headroom for a good price is going to be much better than skylake quad core mainstream chips.
You guys realize, 8 Zen cores will cost more than 4 Skylake? Yeah, it will outperform it in most things, but will still cost more...
Being AMD fanboy as faq, i will jump on the bandwagon... But i am not sure many people will support AMD in this venture...
Zen with 12 or even 16 core would not hurt...
I just want to upgrade from my FX-8320 to another 8 core that delivers performance for its 540€ pricetag
I'm hoping for i7 performance for i5 money, even if that may not be realistic. I'm definitely getting one though.
Agree but it looks like only the APUs will have 16 cores.
We got slides, no confirmed or complete information.
Let me have my hopes and dreams!
nobody knows yet, and if they did, they'd be under NDA
/thread
Nobody knows yet indeed.
But Zen beating Skylake wenn it comes to per core performance and ipc?
Probably not.
Could be. Just imagine 2 monster killer cores... For exactly which reason do people need per core performance when Vulkan is arround the corner?
Something, anything to kick Intel back into gear.
Who says that Vulkan will even become a thing?
Per core performance will still remain to be important on the desktops.
Simply because the main tasks that the average user use their destops machines for, simply dont need gazillion cores.
Well, BF4 wants at least 4 cores. Cities:Skylines does aswell. FC4 can´t remember, but there were some problems.
I think we are in the 8 core era in gaming machines by now.
As said earlier, I would be happy with a multicore monster.
I dont see it happen, simply because of the distance they have on intel.
They will improve allot, i think that Jim keller said something about "compatitive" to haswell.
This will mean, till the time they bring Zen to the market, they will be 2 gens behind again.
It would be realy nice if they could toutch Skylake, but i'm skeptical as what i have seen from the cpu diagrams back in the day.
I dont think that AMD is in that financial position to climb that mountain to kick intels but.
But they might be some what compatitive again.
They dont have to beat intel by any means, as long as they can deliver decent performance for the right price.
Yeah but its the same old story again with zen.
There wont be 16 individual standalone cores on the die.
Atleast as far as the diagrams from 2015 showed.
Still i´m currious how it all will workout, its design looks prommising.
I heared they were planning on having 4 packages of 4 cores each work together. Not sure if that is something one can turn on and off in BIOS settings but it would be nice.
On Vulkan: Intel has a beta driver out. You know, Intel, the big CPU manufacturer. AMD GPUs running driver version 16.3 or higher support Vulcan.
Not sure about Nvidia... might be added together with asynchronous computing.
Idc until they're out
More shared FPU BS? NoooooooO!!
265bit FPUs tho. Not sure why everyone was so unhappy about that. At least they did not put the volltage regulators back on to the CPU.
I do expect that ZEN will be realy a big step forwards from the current FX line of cpu´s.
Beating intel on per core performance and ipc will be hard.
And i personaly dont expect that they would achieve that based on their financial healthness.
But if they somehow manage to do it, then i will be blown away.
We realy need competition, to kick intel in the butt.
