Thoughts on the DOOM Open Beta?

UPDATE

Some footage from DOOM appeared in a Qain's world episode that IMO looked way better than the open beta made it out to be, does this at all sway your previous votes?

New poll is in the following post:

Based upon what's been released so far in terms of the open beta and details about the final game, dlc etc., will you buy DOOM?

  • Yes
  • No
  • If it's on sale
  • I'm not sure yet

I've played quite a bit of it. Got to the max level, 15, obviously. Curious as to what others here thought of it.

The one thing above all else that really pissed me off is for some reason everyone else's guns never seemed to make any sounds. Sounds from projectiles, like rockets or bullets, fine. But the initial "BANG" of the shotgun (which, if I shoot myself is loud enough for the next door neighbours to hear, through my headphones), per se, was absent. Not entirely sure if it's just me or not.

When the game was running it'd also mute everything else, like winamp, which was annoying. I'd have to close the game, set the music off then launch the game if I wanted to stick some music on and was playing! Ridiculous.

I also wasn't able to record gameplay. This made me very sad. These are all things that'll probably get fixed though.

Bit slow, don't like the CoD leveling up part, most of the weapons are crap, otherwise it's fine I guess hopefully the full release has a lot more weapons to pick from and it rebalances them.

The leveling up was probably a necessity to give people an incentive to keep playing but I'd rather it didn't unlock weapons, just aesthetic items that don't have any effect on gameplay. I suppose the weapons were pretty balanced so there wasn't any real advantage, though. I only ever really used the rocket launcher and the sniper thing. The only real big differences were being able to create your own loadouts and the siphon grenade, although to be honest the normal frag grenade is probably pretty decent. I never used it though.

Another thing that bothered me that I hope'll get fixed, or is deliberate to keep people getting too gud and ruining it for everyone else in the open beta, is that once I hit lvl15, a couple matches in, matchmaking started taking foreverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

The movement felt way too slow, and there isn't even a sprint button. Guns felt weak, even the shotgun at close range. Ended up just using the rocket launcher.

Sprint and Arena shooter should never be in the same sentence.

The movement is sooooo slow

Loadouts make weapons too weak IMO. The leveling system just shouldn't be there either.

Played it a bit today. Meh. This isn't Doom. It is Doom pushed through the filter of modern shooters.

Loadouts are dump as is the leveling system. The weapons are not fun to use and seem weak. Movement speed is far too slow.

Also they announced day 1 DLC for this game so that is another notch into the shit pit.

Overall not impressed. I'm not disappointed because I figured it would be pretty bad (it is ID and Bethesda after all) but we'll see what its like when it launches

This made me die a little inside.

Adding to the list, can't skip the credit screens.

Adding two more things to the list which probably won't plague the final game but there were server management problems. A lot of the time I couldn't join servers because they were full or I was sitting in a lobby, completely alone, waiting for other players for 10 minutes until I quit. And my other problem is that on my second match there was already a russian CS:GO player yelling things like cyka in the voice... even though I turned off the damn voice chat

Yeah. I kind of have a new rule. if a game has Day 1 DLC I won't buy it.

FYI y'all I added a poll. Curious as to how many people here will actually buy the game.

Downloaded it late last night, only just got round to giving it a go and it just crashed twice at the menu.

Restarted and exact same issue, pity really wanted to have a quick play.

I was excited for Doom, but disappointed by the Beta. It feels like an old game put through at "let's make this like CoD" meat grinder. You can't out CoD CoD, just be something else.

OT: How did you do that poll? Is it just some markdown?

Oh cool, that's a piece of cake.

Almost need a whole new computer just to run the game.

I don't think it's fast enough for me, needs a little bit more speed like unreal tournament, quake etc.

Day 1 DLC is also really lame, I know that other games most likely already have partitioned out DLC behind closed doors and I'd rather all the game devs keep it that way.

Other than the above, it has great graphics and audio - the power-ups and demon runes are a good mix/concept.

I imagine the game will be a fad that will lose out ultimately to other games like Battlefield, CS, CoD.

Its okay but as far as speed is just as slow as other games i playes. most games are too slow for me now after playing a fast paced game like only dirtybomb for 400hrs. I can't play Cs go as its painfully slow for me and although I do like the new ghost in the shell game it's too slow to keep me interested. I need fast paced fps games or I get bored fast.
