Curious what everyone's thoughts are on the Late Show premier tonight?
Colbert? I had high hopes, but except for 2-3 jokes I half liked, I will say no... and that response has nothing to do with having Jeb as guest, which is another no. Maybe being someone who is fan of British humor, watch at least one standup a week (netflix) I am too weird for that, so I probably will not switch to that channel at that time soon.
He is still much better than Letterman, which I could not stand last few years; much much better than Seth.
Still, Kimmel and Fallon are funnier. Craig was also better. Maybe he can get Secretariat from Craig.
I missed the debut, but I'm planing on finding some time to watch it. Overall, I like Colbert at some level. However, I sort of think that he will end up going down the same road as Conan. When Conan transitioned from his later time slot on NBC to hosting the Tonight Show, they really reined things in and established a more conservative line in the sand with regards to controversial and quasi-offensive jokes, which made their content much less funny in my opinion. I think that whenever you move to either an earlier time slot on popular network tv or from a more niche cable channel to a mega network channel, you end up losing a bit of the edge of the original. As a fellow star wars nerd, I have to root for him a bit though. Hopefully the show goes well.
I watched it the morning after just to see what he did. It's just another late night talk show. The only difference is Colbert's slightly off-beat humor. Everything else was standard cookie cutter late night show.
Of course, that shouldn't surprise anyone. I doubt CBS would allow him to change the format much. Too dangerous. Why do you think Jay Leno went from being one of the funniest, most respected stand-up comedians to a bland, unoffensive grey paste of a host when he took over the Tonight Show? Because the networks require that those shows appeal to EVERYONE. And when something appeals to everyone, it really appeals to no one. It's just something bland and unoffensive that's on every night. So people over 40 watch it while they are trying to fall asleep.
Too bad. I like Colbert. Would have preferred to see him do something with less restrictions.
like conan
Yeah. I sure miss Conan's old old show. It appeared as though it was still under the iron rule of NBC, but a bit under the radar of some of the NBC rule makers. It just went downhill when he briefly hosted the Tonight Show and then continued as he moved to TBS.
