This normal?

So my r9 270x is doing this, ambient room temps are about 78-80 degrees F; I know that this hard runs hot, I've had it for almost a year but should it be running this hot just idling at the desktop?

Edit - So I have also turned off my overclock for about 2 days sense i realized it was doing this, also its a reference cooler.

that's pretty damn hot, mine's idling at 38 right now, thing just shuts off at 70

._. ok, I'll look into it more, thanks for the info

Have you tried another monitoring software like HW monitor? sometimes certain software can spit out wrong readings. If the card was fine before and just recently started reading high temps it could just be a software issue, also make sure the fan is spinning properly and heatsync is not obstructed if you haven't already. You should be more worried about full load temps though, I once had a faulty CPU sensor that read over 300C at idle but once I loaded up the CPU it would read around 60C - 65C.

  • check that its fan is working
  • clean case
  • uninstall drivers, then fresh reinstallation
  • use different monitoring software as previously mentioned
  • worst case - reapply the TIM and test again. or RMA it.

I've already rebuild the card, only decreased 1-2 degrees probs cause better thermal paste. I'll try a couple different temp monitoring apps, thanks for the suggestion.

Done everything except for the worst case part, and that offers at most 1-2 degrees better temps. The card only goes up to about 85-90 when under full load so it's within the thermal limit and I'm not really worried about that its just seemed odd to me having the card running so hot when I was doing nothing, However is it gets worse i probably will RMA.

what model?

r9 270x reference

Are you running dual/multiple monitors? Some cards dont clock down to an idle clock when you are using extended displays (not only amd cards, for example also the gtx 400/500 series). Check if your idle clock is the full 1050 mhz, that would explain the temps.

Only 1 screen ;P and the clock is down to 300mhz.

Well, thats weird. If the cooler is otherwise mounted correctly my best guess is that the sensor are wonky. You could run your card idling with 100% fan speed, the side panel off and the monitor turned off for a while. If the gpu Temp doesnt go down to maybe 10°C over ambient but stays around 50-60 im relatively positive the temperature reporting is off (90 °C under load also sounds very wrong for a 270x).
