So, i just bought a SSD, clean installed my OS to it (windows 8.1) along with wiping my old HDD afterward. i remember reading around there was something to do to make the SSD performance better, i remember one being turning of defrag. Any tips or tricks i should know since im an utter noob when it comes to this.
Well with Windows you'd want to make sure degrag is turned off for your SSD, and then make sure TRIM is enabled. For additonal (optional) things you can refer here
Windows should recognize it as an SSD and automatically turn scheduled defrags off, but it never hurts to check though. Another thing that helps SSD performance is to make sure you have a decent amount of free space available. As they fill up, their performance takes a nose dive. There is no real specific amount to keep free. Some people say half, others say a quarter. Your best bet is to just keep it as empty as you can while still using it the way you want.
Some body should make a program to run all optimizations for SSD's is there one?
one thing i havent figured out is what i should spit to put on my SDD and my HDD i know enough to put my steam stuff onto my HDD and redirect my folders like downloads and pictures. But whats ideal to put on an SSD. Also since people say keep it around half the drive as used, is there a way to partition off space that wont be use to stop it from that nose dive?
Basically, just put anything you want to load quickly on the SSD. Programs benefit the most (program scratch disks/page files do also if you have room to allocate). Games do as well, but if your steam library is anything like mine, then you'd fill up your SSD with nothing but games lol. If you're doing video editing or something similar, storing your project files on the SSD can drastically speed up the process, but just standard file storage is usually best suited for the HDD as load times are usually perfectly fine for single files.
As far as partitioning, it would technically work, but I wouldn't worry about it. Just keep an eye on your available space. Besides, it's better to have the added flexibility of the extra space, and you can just clear it off if necessary. It's not like the drive stops working when you hit 80% capacity or something. The performance just dips.
