The Witcher 2 for linux -80% on Steam

For those that want something else to play on their linux machines and use Steam, there is a one day promo for The Witcher 2 at 3.99 EUR (that's 80% off).

There aren't that many decent RPG's available (especially not natively on Linux), so that may be a good deal for RPG fans.

Nice. I heard about the native linux support. But with 80% off i'm will buy it. :)

I saw the game and instantly bought it... always wanted to play it, now its the time...

Guys the performance in linux is horrendous i heard that it was just a "wrapped windows version", so you can only play if if you have a high end gpu :(

Yup, it's an eON wrap, it does perform less on most modern systems than just playing with wine. If you buy it, you can still play the Windows version on wine also. Wine these days hardly causes a noticeable performance hit anymore compared to Windows. It's just not practical, and you can't sell a dog a bone when he has to dip it in wine first...

But it's just 4 EUR, and let's see what happens if the linux shitstorm breaks loose... there is still something like Steam updates, you can bet Valve isn't going to come out of this one without solving the issues or having their entire linux adventure slaughtered by the linux communities. So they're going to do something about the issues. The open source/linux community doesn't forgive or forget, look at what happened to Canonical, where even the head rat, Jono Bacon, has left the ship.

I think it's a more than worthwhile 4 EUR experiment. It's the price of an icecream for fuck's sake, except with a hell of a lot more consumer rights and community class action summary justice power. It's not like every Windows game runs well on every Windows computer, except that Windows users don't complain and don't tear the vendor apart if they don't do something about it. The linux community is a wild posse with lynching on their minds and an unseen kill rate. And to be honest, I don't think GabeN is ignorant about that.

Just enjoy being part of the interesting process that is going to unfold, in the knowledge that you'll always be able to get the Windows version running perfectly fine in wine also, because it's included in the price.

Don't you think Valve would have brought out games on wine if they could, everybody knows that most Windows games work just fine with wine. Maybe Valve needs to break through a barrier, and maybe the Polish studio CDProjekt Red isn't shitting their pants enough to actually be instrumental in making that happen? Maybe this is more about solving a problem with Windows than anything else...

I've seen some posts from people who says it performs fantastic on their system, and others say it performs horridly. I believe I read that Radeon and Intel HD is not supported.

Yup, it's not, only nVidia, but that's just a pathetic means of preventive damage control, because it's the smallest group amongst linux users, and they hope that they can say: "why do you complain that it doesn't work, we clearly said that it was only for nVidia users", but of course, that kind of bogus arguments hold no grounds in the open source community, they will be crucified if they don't clean up the bugs.

I'll try it out for myself tomorrow, but my guess is that it will work pretty well. You have to remember that a lot of linux users have switched recently, and they often make mistakes in configuring their system. Because of the inherent performance of linux, many of them would for instance not see that they are not running proprietary drivers, etc... and then are surprised that wrapped games don't perform that well. I'll report on my findings tomorrow, but I wouldn't worry too much about the return on investment of this 4 EUR purchase to be honest. I am very curious though about the shit storm Valve is going to attract with this. I'm contemplating making a large portion of popcorn to watch the plot unfold this weekend.

Apparently AMD has released a revised Catalyst 14.4 driver that is supposed to work with Witcher 2. Shocked that AMD has responded so quickly to an issue with their driver.
